Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling power in a wireless communication system having multiple reverse-link channels. One embodiment comprises adjusting power levels of a first set of channels and a corresponding pilot channel while maintaining a set traffic-to-pilot (T/P) ratio between them, and adjusting T/P ratios for one or more remaining channels independently of the power level of the pilot channel. A base station determines whether frames received on the first set of channels contain errors and sends messages to a mobile station to increment or decrement the power levels, respectively, if the frames do or do not contain errors. T/P ratios of the additional channels are adjusted by determining whether frames received on the additional channels contain errors, incrementing or decrementing the T/P ratios appropriately, and transmitting the T/P ratios to the mobile station, which controls the transmission parameters for the respective channels in accordance with the received T/P ratios.

Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein address the need in the art for reduced overhead control with the ability to adjust transmission rates as necessary. In one aspect, a first signal indicates an acknowledgement of a decoded subpacket and whether or not a rate control command is generated, and a second signal conditionally indicates the rate control command when one is generated. In another aspect, a grant may be generated concurrently with the acknowledgement. In yet another aspect, a mobile station monitors the first signal, conditionally monitors the second signal as indicated by the first signal, and may monitor a third signal comprising a grant. In yet another aspect, one or more base stations transmit one or more of the various signals. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of providing the flexibility of grant-based control while utilizing lower overhead when rate control commands are used, thus increasing system utilization, increasing capacity and throughput.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving data provide for efficient use communication resources by encoding data in accordance with a first code to produce a block of data, determining transmission data rate of a time frame, selecting a portion of the block of data based on the determined transmission data rate, adding a location identifier data to the portion of data to produce a payload data, wherein the location identifier identifies a location of the portion of data within the block of data, and encoding the payload data in accordance with a second code to produce a packet of data for transmission over the time frame. A transmitter transmits the packet of data over the time frame at the determined data rate. A receiver receives the packet of data over the time frame, and processes the received data accordingly to reproduce the block of data.

Abstract: A method for determining a current rate of a current frame in a communication system having a transmitter that transmits to a receiver, said transmitter transmitting each of a plurality of frames at the current rate, wherein said current rate corresponds to one of a plurality of rates, said method comprising the steps of: generating a plurality of error check values each based on whether said current frame has one of said plurality of values, wherein only first and second error check values of first and second rates favorably check, and wherein said first and second rates are from said plurality of rates; generating a plurality of error rate values each based on whether said current frame has one of said plurality of rates, wherein first and second error rate values correspond to said first and second rates; comparing said first error rate value to said second error rate value plus a first value based on a predetermined relationship; and determining that said current rate of said current frame is said second rate if said first error rate value has said predetermined relationship to said second error rate value plus a first value, and otherwise determining that said current rate is said first rate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.
