Abstract: Aspects describe communications environments in which femtocell capability is provided to devices within the communications network. A non-femto enabled device and/or a femto enabled device can communicate with a femto enabled device in the same geographical area for femto-enabled peer-to-peer communication. Two non-femto enabled devices can be provided femto functionality through utilization of a femto enabled device, which operates as a hub between the two devices. Other aspects relate to enhanced position determination, adaptive coverage enhancement, local mobile networks, open access femtocells without a backhaul, and local broadcast of media though utilization of femto enabled devices.

A processor ( 401 ) is configured for passing, to a higher level protocol in network ( 105 ), the received in-sequence RLP packets of data, from the accumulated data in a re-sequencing buffer ( 480 ), without waiting for receiving retransmission of a missing RLP packet of data when the accumulated RLP packets of data exceeds an amount of data threshold without waiting for an elapsed time of an abort timer to exceed an abort period of time threshold.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a data rate associated with the transmission of information from a base station (100) to a mobile station (300) in a mobile radio communication system. The mobile station (300) alternately receives information from a basestation (100) either in a variable rate mode or a fixed rate mode. The transmission rate from a base station (600) in the variable rate mode varies between successive data transmit intervals, and the transmission rate from a base station in the fixed rate mode remains fixed between successive data transmit intervals. Data is transmitted from a first base station (400) to the mobile station in the variable rate mode until the first base station is unable to receive the variable data rate control information from the mobile station. When the first base station (400) is unable to receive the variable data rate control information from the mobile station (300), the mobile station (300) attempts to remain in the variable rate mode by searching for a second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station (300) in the variable rate mode and, if the mobile station (300) is able to locate the second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station in the variable rate mode, then the second base station transmits data to the mobile station in the variable rate mode and transmissions from the first base station to the mobile station (300) in the variable rate mode terminate. If the mobile station is unable to locate the second base station that will support data transmissions to the mobile station in the variable rate mode, data is transmitted to the mobile station (300) from either the first base station (400) or a different base station in the fixed rate mode.

Abstract: Synchronized broadcast transmits a same broadcast content using a same waveform from multiple transmitters. Transmitters each apply a same spreading code for broadcast transmissions. In a spread-spectrum communication system having a time division multiplexed forward link, a synchronized broadcast transmission is inserted into a broadcast slot. One embodiment employs an Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplex (OFDM) waveform for the synchronized broadcast. An OFDM receiver is then used to process the received synchronized broadcast transmission. An alternate embodiment implements a broadcast Pseudo-random Noise (PN) code for use by multiple transmitters. An equalizer is then employed to estimate the synchronized broadcast transmission.

Abstract: Method for reducing call dropping rates in a multi-beam communication system that includes a user terminal, a gateway, and a plurality of beam sources projecting a plurality of beams, and where a link between the user terminal and the gateway is established on one or more beams. The method relies on a messaging protocol between the gateway and the user. Based on messages sent from the user to the gateway, preferably on a preselected periodic basis, the gateway determines the more desirable beam(s) for transmitting to the user. The messages sent from the user to the gateway contain values representing beam strengths as measured at the user. The gateway uses the user measured beam strengths to select the beams that should be used for the user. The beams to be used are the beams that will decrease the call dropping rates and provide a desired level of beam source diversity.
