Layered glass structures and fabrication methods are described. The methods include depositing soot on a dense glass substrate to form a composite structure and sintering the composite structure to form a layered glass structure. The dense glass substrate may be derived from an optical fiber preform that has been modified to include a planar surface. The composite structure may include one or more soot layers. The layered glass structure may be formed by combining multiple composite structures to form a stack, followed by sintering and fusing the stack. The layered glass structure may further be heated to softening and drawn to control linear dimensions. The layered glass structure or drawn layered glass structure may be configured as a planar waveguide.

An optical fiber suitable to support single mode optical transmission at longer wavelengths (e.g., 1550 nm) is formed to comprise a pure silica core region and a "down doped" cladding layer. The core region is defined as having a diameter d and the cladding layer is defined has having an outer diameter D. In accordance with the present invention, single mode propagation wí11 be supported when D/d > 8.5, and is preferably in the range of 9 - l 0.

A dispersion shift optical fiber comprises a center core part (1), a step core part (2) having a refractive index smaller than that of the center core part (1), and a clad (7) provided around the step core part (2) and having a refractive index smaller than that of the step core part (2). In a wavelength band for use selected from the range from 1490 to 1625 nm, the wavelength dispersion is 7-15 ps/km/nm, Aeff is 60-150 mu m , the dispersion slope is 0.09 ps/km/nm , the bending loss is 100 dB/m or less.
