    Abstract: PURPOSE: A soft decision decoder, and a log-likelihood ratio calculation apparatus during soft decision decoding and its method are provided to improve decoding performance of a received signal by performing an optimum signal decoding. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of log-likelihood ratio calculation apparatus(100) uses a received signal(y) containing noise inputted from a receiver to perform a soft decision decoding as to an orthogonal amplitude modulated signal, and calculate a log-likelihood ratio of a positive(+) signal and a negative(-) signal. A subtract(112) determines a difference of log-likelihood ratio of the positive signal and the negative signal being output from the plurality of log-likelihood ratio calculation apparatus. And a comparator(114) receives the calculation result of the log-likelihood ratio difference of the subtract and then determines the orthogonal amplitude modulated signal as positive(+) or negative(-) according as the calculation result is positive or negative number.
