    Abstract: A method and system for controlling access to a medium in a wireless communication system. A superframe structure is defined in time domain to include a contention free period (CFP) which has at least one scheduled resource allocation (SRA), at least one management SRA (MSRA) and a contention period. An extended beacon (EB) including information about the SRA and MSRA is transmitted for. The MAC architecture reduces station battery consumption, supports higher throughput for non-real time (NRT) traffic and is more efficient for real time (RT) traffic while maintaining full compatibility.

    Abstract: A method performed by a WTRU may comprise transmitting a request for attachment to a base station. Authentication may be performed between the WTRU and a cellular core network node of a cellular core network, via the base station. The method may further comprise transmitting a registration request to the cellular core network via SIP over an IMS and transmitting a SIP message indicating a capability of the WTRU to receive data messages via the IMS. The WTRU may receive, in accordance with the capability of the WTRU to receive data messages via the IMS, at least one data message, from the base station, via the IMS. The data message may be displayed on a display of the WTRU.

    Abstract: A method and system for supporting an evolved universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) are disclosed. The system includes a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a UTRAN and an E-UTRAN. The UTRAN sends to the WTRU a list of available radio access technologies in a coverage area of the UTRAN. The list includes information related to the E-UTRAN. The WTRU receives the list and may initiate a handoff based on the list. The WTRU then sends its multi-mode/multi-RAT capability information including the E-UTRAN capability to the UTRAN. The UTRAN then sends a measurement capability message to the WTRU. The measurement capability message includes parameters necessary for performing measurements on an E-UTRAN channel. The WTRU performs measurements based on the measurement capability message and reports measurement results to the UTRAN. The UTRAN may initiate a handoff to the E-UTRAN based on the measurement results.

    Abstract: A wireless communication system and method of implementing an evolved system attachment procedure are disclosed. The system includes a first core network and a second core network which is evolved from the first core network. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends an attach request message to the second core network. The second core network activates a packet data protocol (PDP) context and sends an attach accept message to the WTRU. The attach accept message includes information regarding the PDP context. The second core network constructs a session and mobility management (SMM) context for session management (SM) and mobility management (MM) for the WTRU.

    Abstract: A method and system for reporting evolved universal mobile telecommunication systems (UMTS) terrestrial radio access network (E-UTRAN) capabilities are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) sends a first message to a core network (CN) to report the E-UTRAN capabilities of the WTRU. The CN then updates the WTRU capabilities based on the first message. The first message may include a radio access capability information element (IE) which carries information related to E-UTRAN capabilities of the WTRU and/or a network capability IE which carries information regarding network capabilities of the WTRU. The CN may send a second message to the WTRU to report network capabilities with respect to the radio access networks (RANs) to which the core network is connected and services that can be provided over the E-UTRAN.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing a handoff between radio access networks (RANs) deployed under different radio access technologies (RATs) are disclosed. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) is equipped with at least two radio units to support the RATs. Each RAN sends a list of co-located RANs in the coverage area of the RAN to the WTRU. The WTRU stores the list and determines whether handoff criteria is met by one of the co-located RANs. The WTRU then initiates a handoff from a current RAN to a target RAN if the handoff criteria is met by the target RAN. Alternatively, the WTRU may send a measurement report to the current RAN, whereby the current RAN determines whether handoff criteria is met by a selected one of the co-located RANs and initiate a handoff to the selected RAN if the handoff criteria is met.

El sistema de telecomunicaciones movil universal con programa de sociedad de tercera generacion incluye una compuerta para mensaje corto de protocolo de internet que tiene una representacion de servicio de mensaje corto. La unidad de transmision / recepcion inalámbrica está registrada con la representacion de servicio de mensajes cortos para establecer conectividad de servicio de mensajes cortos y está registrada también con el servidor de servicios multimedia para establecer conectividad de servicios multimedia. Se notifica a la unidad de transmision / recepcion inalámbrica cuando el servidor de servicios multimedia recibe un mensaje para la unidad de transmision / recepcion inalámbrica. Luego, la unidad de transmision / recepcion inalámbrica recupera al mensaje de servicios multimedia desde la memoria del servidor de servicios multimedia.
