A process for producing a dibromonitro compound represented by the general formula
wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, which comprises condensing nitromethane with formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in the presence of an alkali, the amount of the aldehyde being at least 1.5 moles per mole of nitromethane; and thereafter without isolating the product, treating the reaction mixture with bromine to brominate the product.

4,4'-Dinitrodibenzyle werden hergestellt, indem man 4-Nitrotoluole in Gegenwart eines organischen Lösungs- und/oder Verdünnungsmittels mit einem Alkali- und/oder Erdalkalialkoholat umsetzt und anschließend das Reaktionsgemisch mit einer wäßrigen Lösung von unterhalogenigen Säuren und/oder deren Salzen oder mit Chlor, Brom oder einer wäßrigen Lösung von Wasserstoffperoxid und/oder dessen Salzen oder mit organischen oder anorganischen Persäuren und/oder deren Salzen behandelt.

Process for the synthesis of compounds of formula I (FORMULA) wherein O, is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or heteroaryl group and U and V may be chosen from a range of substituents including hydrogen, halogen, alkyl and alkoxy; the process comprising reacting a sulfate ester of formula II, wherein Q is a cation, with a compound of formula III, wherein L is a leaving group (FORMULA) and hydrolysing the sulfate ester formed. Preferably the sulfate ester of formula II is prepared by the oxidation of a phenol of formula IV with a persulfate.
