    Abstract: A method of communicating speech comprising time-warping a residual low band speech signal to an expanded or compressed version of the residual low band speech signal, time-warping a high band speech signal to an expanded or compressed version of the high band speech signal, and merging the time-warped low band and high band speech signals to give an entire time-warped speech signal. In the low band, the residual low band speech signal is synthesized after time-warping of the residual low band signal while in the high band, an unwarped high band signal is synthesized before time-warping of the high band speech signal. The method may further comprise classifying speech segments and encoding the speech segments. The encoding of the speech segments may be one of code-excited linear prediction, noise-excited linear prediction or 1/8 frame (silence) coding.

The de-jitter buffer methods and apparatus presented modify the playback of packets dependent upon whether silence periods are detected inter-sentence or intra-sentence to optimize voice quality in a communication system. In one example, a de-jitter buffer determines the length of at least one silence period associated with a plurality of received packets and determines a time to transmit a portion of the packets based on the determined length of the silence period. In another example, a silence characterizer unit performs this function.

    Abstract: Techniques for supporting operation with enhanced uplink in inactive state are described. A user equipment (UE) may send an access preamble for random access while in an inactive state and may receive a message containing resources allocated to the UE. The allocated resources may be selected by a Node B from a pool of resources pre-allocated to the Node B for the enhanced uplink. The UE may send information (e.g., scheduling information and/or its UE identity) to the Node B using the allocated resources. The UE may receive an acknowledgement addressed to the UE based on the UE identity. The UE may remain in the inactive state and continue to use the allocated resources until they are de-allocated. Alternatively, the UE may transition to an active state and either continue to use the allocated resources or receive an allocation of new resources for the active state.

    Abstract: Providing for improved wireless communications for user equipment (UE) in a semi-active state is described herein. By way of example, a base station can employ particular wireless channel resources, monitored by a UE in a CELL_FACH state for instance, to trigger channel feedback information from the UE. The trigger can comprise an explicit order instructing the UE to provide data in response, or can include a portion of downlink traffic targeting the UE, where the UE is configured to respond in a suitable manner to receipt of traffic data. The UE can maintain the CELL_FACH state in receiving to and responding to the trigger, and can further receive subsequent traffic data in such state. Accordingly, the subject disclosure provides for improved efficiency and reliability in semi-active state wireless communications.
