    Abstract: In a cellular telephone system a system for directing communications between a mobile user and cell-sites as a mobile user changes cell-site service areas. The mobile user includes an apparatus for, while in communication with another system user via one cell-site, determining a transition of the mobile user from the cell-site service area to the service area of another cell-site. The system includes circuitry responsive to the indication for coupling communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site while the mobile user also remains in communication with the system user via the first cell-site. The system further includes apparatus responsive to the coupling of the communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site for terminating the communications between the mobile user and another system user via cell-site with communications continuing between the mobile user and the system user via the new cell-site.

    Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

A POWER CONTROL FEEDBACK SCHEME MAY ALSO BE UTILIZED. AT THE CELL-SITE COMMUNICATING WITH THE MOBILE UNIT, THE MOBILE UNIT TRANSMITTED POWER IS MEASURED (60) AS RECEIVED AT THE CELL-SITE.     Abstract: In a communications network, a network user communicates through a remote unit via at least one base station. The communications network includes a first mobile switching center for controlling communications through a first set of base stations and a second mobile switching center for controlling communications through a second set of base stations. The network also includes a service providing base station controlled by the first mobile switching center and providing service to a first transition coverage area using a first pseudorandom noise code. The first transition coverage area defines a boundary between a first system controlled by the first mobile switching center and a second system controlled by the second mobile switching center. The network further includes a passage providing base station controlled by the second mobile switching center for providing service to the first transition area using a second pseudorandom noise code offset in time by a first amount from the first pseudorandom noise code. The passage providing base station provides service to a remote unit only if the remote unit is entering the first transition coverage area while exiting the second system or is about to exit the first transition coverage area while entering the second system.
