Abstract: A process for the production of (meth)acrylate esters (I) by esterification of (meth)acrylic acid (II) with mono- or poly- hydric alcohols (III) is claimed. The reaction mixture, still containing (II) in amounts equivalent to an acid number of at least 5 mg KOH/g, is treated with amino compound(s) (IV) containing at least one prim., sec. or tert. amino group. Also claimed are: (1) esters (I) obtained by this process; and (2) radiation-curable materials (RCM) containing (I).

Abstract: (Meth)acrylate compound is prepared by esterification with an alcoholic hydroxyl-containing compound using a copper salt as polymerization inhibitor and neutralizing the product with a basic inorganic compound(s). Preparation of (meth)acrylate comprises: (i) esterifying acrylic and/or methacrylic acids with a compound(s) with at least one alcoholic hydroxyl group at 90-150 degrees C in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst, a polymerization inhibitor, comprising a copper(II) salt optionally mixed with a copper (I) salt, the copper sulfide obtained being precipitated and separated after reaction, and a hydrocarbon of b.pt. 60-140 degrees C as water drawing agent; (ii) distilling off excess (meth)acrylic acid at 90-150 degrees C under normal pressure: and (iii) optionally neutralizing the product with a basic inorganic compound(s).

Abstract: A crosslinking reaction is initiated in a reactive paint formulation. This is coated-onto a surface at least locally, before reaction is completed. Independent claims are included for equipment carrying out the process, and for the coating so produced. The equipment employs a sprayer and/or electrostatic applicator with bell housing. Preferred features: Initiation of reaction preferably employs UV illumination (1), in conjunction with at least one photoinitiator in the formulation. Kinetics of the reaction are controlled by temperature variation, and/or by use of a sufficiently slowly-running reaction, especially a cationic polymerization, and/or by spatial separation of photoinitiator(s) from the formulation components and/or by minimizing reactivity of the photoinitiator(s). Spatial separation cited, is by nano-structuring of the paint formulation. Further stages include mixing a UV protection agent and/or pigment into the formulation before coating. A hand spray gun (6) applies the paint. In the equipment, optical fibers (3, 4) transmit UV light to the paint formulation.

Abstract: Radiation-curable urethane prepolymers are made from a mixture in which the isocyanate component contains two different trifunctional isocyanates or one tri- and one di-functional isocyanate, or the unsaturated polyol component contains at least two different unsaturated compounds with reactive hydroxyl groups and possibly other hydroxy compounds. A process for the production of radiation-curable, urethane group-containing prepolymers (PU) comprises reacting an isocyanate component (A) containing trifunctional isocyanate(s) (A1) and optionally difunctional isocyanate(s) (A2) with a polyol component (B) containing unsaturated compound(s) with at least one reactive hydroxyl group (B1) and optionally other OH group-containing compounds (B2), in which either (A) contains two different compounds (A1) or one (A1) and one (A2), or component (B) contains at least two different compounds (B1). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) radiation-curable urethane prepolymers obtained by this process; (2) radiation-curable preparations containing prepolymers (PU) as above and possibly conventional additives etc.; (3) a process for coating substrates by applying PU or preparations containing PU to the substrate, removing any solvent; and hardening with UV or electron beam radiation; (4) coated substrates obtained by this process.
