Abstract: A recommendation for purchase or selection of a package of food to a consumer, such as a retail of wholesale purchaser of the food package, or a direct or indirect consumer of the food contained in the food package is generated by selecting at least one nutritional value from a food package label by optical character recognition of a representation of the selected nutritional value as it is presented on the package of food. The at least one selected nutritional value is compared to at least one recommended nutritional value corresponding to the selected nutritional value to form at least one comparison value. The comparison value is employed to generate a recommendation that is displayed to the consumer, such as by superimposing the recommendation over an image on a display screen of the food package label as an augmented reality, or in real time, meaning that the recommendation appears simultaneously with the optical character recognition of the nutritional value, wherein the recommendation is displayed with, or is superimposed on an image on the display screen of the representation of the nutritional value, thereby making a recommendation of the food package to the consumer.

Abstract: A ski binding reduces a likelihood of injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the tibia is accomplished by absorption in the binding to limit loads transmitted through the boot-binding interface. Release based on an injury threshold includes a binding response tower attached to the ski and adapted for selective engagement with the ski, such that the binding response tower permits biased vertical and lateral horizontal displacement, prior to a release threshold. The binding is in communication with the boot heel and is adapted for slideable engagement in response to vertical and lateral forces exerted from the boot heel. The binding response tower adapted to disengage, or release upon reaching at least one a predetermined lateral displacement or a predetermined vertical displacement, such as when the boot heel is forced sufficiently sideways or upwards due to skier movement that would tend to cause an ACL injury.

Abstract: An equine respiratory detection device provides an inexpensive, portable appliance for evaluating equine health. A muzzle or mouthpiece attaches to the equine mouth region for sealably engaging with the respiratory pathway. The mouthpiece attached to a tubular vessel having a volumetric sensing apparatus for measuring respiratory inflow and outflow rates. The sensing apparatus includes a hot wire anemometer and sensing circuit for sensing flow rates based on changing electrical characteristics of a sensing element resulting from a temperature and humidity of the respiratory gases. Inhaling results in inflow gases having a cooling effect on a thermistor which affects the current flow in the sensor circuit. Similarly, exhaled outflow gases have increased temperature and humidity which allow identification of bidirectional flow and computation of an overall respiration volume to the equine patient subject.

Abstract: A hydrogen separation membrane employs dense liquid metal separator deposited on a support structure for providing a membrane film allowing passage of hydrogen to be used in industrial processes and consumer applications benefiting from pure hydrogen. A support structure such as silicon carbide is non-reactive with the molten metal, thus withstanding the high temperatures associated with hydrogen producing processes. The liquid metal "wets", or adheres/covers the support structure to form continuous membrane for passing only hydrogen and resisting breakdown leading to discontinuity in the membrane surface. The molten (liquid) metal membrane is "sandwiched" between porous and inert ceramic supports to form a continuous thin film. Molecular hydrogen dissociates on the liquid metal membrane surface when exposed to a hydrogen gas mixture. The resulting hydrogen atoms dissolve into and diffuse across liquid metal film to arrive at the opposite surface, where they reassociate and desorb as pure hydrogen gas.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods of the present application relate to the diagnostic measurement of condition for pressure ulcers. Preferred embodiments utilize pressure measurements at body locations to determine a diagnostic pressure ulcer value. A pressure sensor device generates patient pressure data that is processed by a data processor which utilizes a diagnostic function to determine the diagnostic value that indicates whether corrective action is needed to prevent pressure ulcer formation. One or more sensor devices can be attached to a patient to measure to transmit data for further processing.

Abstract: Cathode material from exhausted lithium ion batteries are dissolved in a solution for extracting the useful elements Co (cobalt), Ni (nickel), Al (Aluminum) and Mn (manganese) to produce active cathode materials for new batteries. The solution includes compounds of desirable materials such as cobalt, nickel, aluminum and manganese dissolved as compounds from the exhausted cathode material of spent cells. Depending on a desired proportion, or ratio, of the desired materials, raw materials are added to the solution to achieve the desired ratio of the commingled compounds for the recycled cathode material for new cells. The desired materials precipitate out of solution without extensive heating or separation of the desired materials into individual compounds or elements. The resulting active cathode material has the predetermined ratio for use in new cells, and avoids high heat typically required to separate the useful elements because the desired materials remain commingled in solution.

Abstract: An electrohydrodynamic (EHD) pump increases refrigerant flow rate and the resulting pressure in a vapor compression based cooling system for permitting reduced compressor sizes and power demands. The EHD pump disposes electrodes in a liquid path of the refrigerant flow, and increases fluid flow and resulting pressure by an induced liquid flow between a pair of asymmetric electrodes. Voltage applied to these electrodes results in a conduction pumping mechanism associated with heterocharge layers in the vicinity of the electrodes based on disassociation of a neutral electrolyte species in the refrigerant fluid and recombination of the generated ions. The induced flow draws the liquid due to a net fluid flow toward one of the electrodes based on the asymmetry of the electrode pair. Electrodes are disposed on an inner surface of refrigerant vessel, in communication with an annular liquid film that forms around the inner circumference in two-phase fluid systems.
