Abstract: An apparatus and method for inflating a vehicular inflatable device are provided wherein inflation gas is produced via a dissociative material wherein an initiator includes an enhanced fuel pyrotechnic formulation which, in addition to initiating dissociation of at least a portion of a quantity of gas source material contained within the inflator, forming dissociation products used to inflate the device, also forms particles to interact with one or more of at least a portion of the remaining quantity of gas source material contained within the inflator and the dissociation products to form additional inflation products for inflating the inflatable device.

Abstract: An inflator apparatus wherein the molecular weight of the gas mixture therein contained is manipulated by varying the relative amounts of the various constituents thereof. Through such manipulation and tight control of gas mixture molecular weight, the performance of the inflator can be properly tuned such as to desirably control or influence the speed of deployment of an associated airbag cushion and minimize or reduce damage to an associated airbag cushion caused by excessive deployment speeds, as well as satisfy the relatively onerous inflation demands required for proper or desired operation of various close proximity airbag cushions or inflatable restraint devices.

Abstract: The inflator comprises an initiator, a fuel chamber containing a liquid fuel, and a housing containing a combustion chamber. An oxidant in the combustion chamber and at least one discharge port are provided. The inflator is arranged so that activation of the initiator initiates the burning of the liquid fuel and oxidant in the combustion chamber producing gases which exit the inflator through the discharge port. The liquid fuel is stored in a porous solid structure within the fuel chamber. The porous solid structure is fabricated from a porous material which is also frangible and is positioned between the initiator and the combustion chamber whereby the combustion products produced by the firing of the initiator are directed at the frangible porous structure causing it to disintegrate and release its fuel into the combustion chamber.
