Abstract: Expandable styrene polymers (I) for elastic polystyrene foam contain (a) 50-75 wt.% polystyrene and/or a copolymer with at least 50 wt.% polystyrene, (b) 5-30 wt.% styrene-soluble elastomer(s), (c) 5-20 wt.% block copolymer(s) with a styrene component, (d) 15-50 wt.% polyolefin(s), (e) 1-15 wt.%, w.r.t. (a)+(b), of a low-boiling blowing agent and opt. (f) usual additives in effective amts. Also claimed are a method for producing (I); elastic foam with a density of 5-70 g/l prepd. from (I); and a method of producing mouldings from (I). Pref. (b) has a Tg below 20 degrees C and esp. is polybutadiene. (c) contains at least 20 wt.% styrene and is a styrene-butadiene (SB) block copolymer, esp. a SB diblock copolymer and/or SBS triblock copolymer. (d) is polyethylene, opt. mixed with polypropylene.

Abstract: Particulate polyolefin foam (I) is based on a phase-compatible mixt. of: (A) two or more ethylene polymers A1+A2+ .... or (B) two or more propylene polymers B1+B2+ ... of different compsn. w.r.t. type and content of monomers. The differential scanning calorimetry curve obtd. by heating 3-6 mg. of the foam particles to 220 deg C at 20 deg C/minute shows two peaks at least 17 deg C apart. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I): (a) by co-extruding and granulating the polymers and foaming the granules obtd., or (b) by copolymerising the corresp. monomers in a reactor cascade, extruding and granulating the reactor blend obtd., and foaming the granules.

Abstract: Bead-form olefin polymers are obtained from grit-form olefin polymers by heating in aqueous suspension to temperatures of at least 10 DEG C above their DSC maximum. Incorporation of dyes, stabilisers and/or other fillers can be carried out by coating the grit olefin polymers with these substances in advance. The bead-form polymers are used to produce foam beads by the impregnation process.
