Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials (I), contain (A) 30-98 wt.% graft copolymer of (aK) 30-90 wt.% rubber-elastic grafting core obtd. by copolymerisation of (aK1) 80-99.99 wt.% (1-10C alkyl) acrylate(s), (aK2) 0.01-20 wt.% crosslinking monomer and (aK3) 0-40 wt.% other comonomer(s) and (aS) 10-70 wt.% grafted shell derived from (aS1) 50-100 wt.% styrene cpd. of formula (II), in which R , R = H or 1-8C alkyl, and/or a (1-8C alkyl) (meth)acrylate and (aS2) 0-50 wt.% other monomer(s), (B) 1-50 wt.% thermoplastic polymer of (b1) 50-100 wt.% styrene and/or alpha -methylstyrene (AMS), (b2) 0-50 wt.% acrylonitrile and (b3) 0-50 wt.% other monomer(s), (C) 1-70 wt.% rubber-elastic block copolymer contg. a hard phase-forming block A based on vinylaromatic monomer units and/or a first rubber-elastic (soft) phase-forming block B based on diene monomer and an (opt. sec. or further) soft phase-forming block B/A based on vinylaromatic and diene units, in which blocks A and B/A have a Tg of above 25 degrees C and below 25 degrees C resp. and the phase vol. ratio of (A):(B/A) is such that the hard phase makes up 1-40 vol.% of (C) and the diene content is less than 50 wt.%, and (D) 0-30 wt.% of a star-shaped polymer obtd. by linking several block copolymer chains based on (d1) 30-90 wt.% styrene and/or AMS and (d2) 10-70 wt.% butadiene and/or isoprene. Abstract: The invention relates to thermoplastic molding material containing the constituents A) to F), 5 to 80 wt. % of a graft polymer A) with a bimodal particle size distribution, 20 to 95 wt. % of a thermoplastic polymer B) with a viscosity VZ of 50 to 120 ml/g and optionally other thermoplastic polymers C), D) and/or E) based on at least one vinyl-aromatic monomer, and optionally additives F). The inventive material can be obtained by 1) producing the graft polymers A) according to the emulsion polymerization method, 2) mixing the graft polymer A) with polymer B) and, insofar as they are available, the other constituents C), D), E) and/or F) in a mixing device, whereby a substantially molten polymer mixture arises and 3) rapidly cooling the substantially molten polymer mixture.

This extruder contains the following sections (in the direction of flow) : (1) feed for adding (A) to the extruder ; (2) at least one crusher for dewatering (A) that contains one or more barriers each with an opening through which at least some of the water passes as a liq. ; (3) at least one section to which molten (B) is added ; (4) one or more sections with mixing, kneading and / or plasticising devices ; (5) at least one degassing section with one or more gas outlets through which the rest of the water is removed as steam ; and (6) an exit zone. Deep draw-modified moulding materials prepd. by this process are also claimed.

Abstract: A process is claimed for the prodn. of impact-modified thermoplastics (I) by (a) mechanical dehydration of a moist elastomer component (A) contg. up to 60 wt% residual water and (b) mixing the dried elastomer obtd. (A') with a thermoplastic polymer (B) in a screw machine. The process is carried out in a twin screw extruder with synchronous double-threaded screws and with the following sequence in the direction of feed: (1) a metering section for introducing component (A) into the extruder via a metering device, (2) squeezing section(s) for removing the water, with accumulator element(s) and associated water outlet(s), (3) section(s) fitted with a feeder screw or with mixing, kneading and/or other plasticising elements, (4) section(s) in which polymer (B) is added as a melt, (5) section(s) fitted with mixing, kneading and/or other plasticising elements, (6) degassing section(s) with gas outlets, in which residual water is removed as vapour, and (7) a discharge zone. The water emerging from the outlets in section (2) is partly or completely in the liq. phase, and the extruder is operated at a screw speed of 50-600 r.p.m., with a mean shear rate of 20-240 s . Also claimed are impact-modified thermoplastic moulding materials (I) obtd. by this process.
