Abstract: Composite sheet material (I) is claimed, with a polypropylene (PP) matrix (II) and fibre mat reinforcement (III), i.e. a GMPP composite. At least 5 wt.% of the matrix (II) consists of recycled beverage bottle tops. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I) which comprises melting the bottle tops (opt. after cleaning and crushing) in an extruder and opt. mixing with other matrix components (B,C,D; see below), and then pressing the melt together with fibre mat (III). Pref. matrix (II) contains (A) 5-100 wt.% recycled bottle tops, (B) 0-95 wt.% fresh PP, (C) 0-80 wt.% thermoplastic other than (B) and (D) recycled fibre-reinforced PP. Component (A) contains 80-100 wt.% heterophase polypropylene/polyethylene copolymer contg. 4-15 wt.% ethylene units and 20-0 wt.% EVA copolymer contg. 4-15 wt.% vinyl acetate units. (I) contains 20-60 wt.% glass fibres mat (III). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of compression moulded or deep-drawn parts for cars, machine construction, domestic appliances etc.. The invention enables the prodn. of a useful GMPP material partly or wholly from recycled bottle tops, e.g. screw tops from soft drink bottles.
