    Abstract: The process for the preparation of crosslinkable copolymers of propylene at elevated temperature by reacting propylene with from 0.05 to 2% by weight of alpha ,ss-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or esters thereof, or anhydrides thereof, characterised in that a multifunctional amine is added, as crosslinking agent, to the copolymer, the temperature and residence time are set so that an as yet uncrosslinked, but crosslinkable mixture is formed, and this mixture is rapidly cooled.

    Abstract: Carboxylic acids of the general formula I where the indices and the variables have the following meanings: R , R and R : independently of one another, a hydrogen atom and a hydroxyl, carboxyl and C1- to C6-alkyl group, x, y and z: independently of one another, 0 or an integer from 1 to 6, and/or their anhydrides are capable of permanently suppressing the formation of water trees in electrical medium- and high-voltage cables containing electrically insulating and/or electrically semiconducting layers based on ethylene homopolymers and/or copolymers. This is even the case if the layers concerned contain water-soluble, basic salts. Accordingly, polymeric mixtures based on ethylene homopolymers and/or copolymers containing the abovementioned carboxylic acids and/or their anhydrides are eminently suitable for manufacturing the electrically insulating and electrically semiconducting layers such as those used in electrical medium- and high-voltage cables.

    Abstract: Copolymers (I) of propylene (P) and up to 35 wt.% other 2-10C 1-alkenes (II), grafted with alpha,beta-unsatd. carboxylic acids or derivs. (III) are claimed. (I) are obtd. by reaction of (III) with the (P) copolymer at 1-500 bar in the absence of radical initiators, by adding 0.01-1 wt.% (III) to the molten copolymer and carrying out the grafting reaction at 210-350 deg.C. Also claimed are (a) crosslinked copolymers obtd. by reaction of (I) with organic crosslinkers (IV) at 1-500 bar and 21-0350 deg. 210-350 deg.C. (b) the crosslinking process, (c) crosslinkable copolymers obtd. by mixing (IV) with (I) for less than 30 secs. at 1-500 bar and below 210 deg.C and rapidly cooling the mixt. and (d) ionomers obtd. by reaction of (I) with salts of (in)organic acids and alkali, alkaline earth or transition metals. The copolymer specifically consists of 40-95 wt.% homo-polypropylene and 5-60 wt.% statistical copolymer of (P) and (II), or a statistical copolymer contg. up to 20 wt.% (II); process (e) is carried out at not above 200 deg.C for not above 25 secs.
