Abstract: 1303163 Aerating liquids BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22051/70 Heading B1C Liquid is aerated by means of an ejector which dips into the liquid. The ejector has a central tube 3 through which liquid flows, e.g. from a pump, and induces a flow of air through a surrounding tube 4. The air and liquid pass through a mixing tube 5 completely immersed in the liquid, inducing through the tube 5 the circulation of the liquid in the container. The liquid may be a lake or river, or be in a container 1 as shown. The process may be used to speed up fermentations, or to aerate sewage. The liquid flows through the tube 3 at between 5 and 100 m/sec., the diameter of the mixing tube 5 is 2-20 times the diameter of the tube 3, and the length of the mixing tube 5 is 2-30 times the diameter of the mixing tube.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of thermoplastic fibrids by shredding a solution of a polymeric thermoplastic in a field of shearing forces, said shredding being performed by passing a homogeneous solution of the thermoplastic in an organic solvent, which is a solvent for said thermoplastic only at elevated temperature, through a nozzle having one or more orifices in the form of an annular die into a zone having the form of an impulse exchange chamber which has a mean inlet diameter of from 2 to 20 times that of the circular area equal to the total cross-sectional area of the nozzle orifices through which the homogeneous solution is extruded and a length of from 2 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter, in which chamber the homogeneous solution is cooled such that the thermoplastics material precipitates and in which a turbulent field of shear forces exists, this being produced by the introduction of one or more jets of a gaseous or liquid medium, which jets are located centrally to the annular orifice, into said impulse exchange chamber at a velocity of from 5 to 500 m/s.

Abstract: 1413356 Fibrids of thermoplastic materials BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 23 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 8938/73 Heading B5B Fibrids (i.e. short fibres) of a thermoplastics material are made by introducing a high-speed propulsive jet and a slower-moving stream of a liquid co-currently into a mixing tube arranged coaxially with the jet, whereby a shear gradient is set up in the mixing tube between the highspeed jet and the slower-moving liquid stream, and feeding the molten thermoplastics material through a die into the region of the shear gradient, whereby the thermoplastics material is broken up into fibres by the action of shear stresses within the region of the shear-gradient. Specified thermoplastics materials include polyethylene, polypropylene and their waxes and extended waxes, polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride and polystyrene. In Fig. 1, the apparatus is enclosed in container 4. Melt is supplied via 6 to outlet orifice 2; the spinning medium, suitably water, is supplied via 5 to the outlet orifice 1 of the propulsive jet; 3 is the impulse exchange chamber or mixing tube. If the relatively slow-moving stream of liquid entrained from the container is replaced by liquid coming from a pump, the container may be dispensed with, as in Fig. 2, where 7 is the feed-line for the slow-moving medium (water) spinning being effected in tube 3 which acts as impulse exchange chamber.

Abstract: A process for drawing in and compressing gases and mixing the same with liquid which comprises propelling a jet of liquid from a propulsive nozzle which is shaped to provide an outlet region of minimum cross-sectional area, causing the resulting jet to become premixed with the gas in a coaxially arranged mixing nozzle which is situated downstream of the propulsive nozzle and is shaped to provide an outlet region of minimum cross-sectional area and minimum hydraulic diameter, and introducing the resulting premix into a region of minimum cross-sectional area of a coaxial, open-ended tube located in a body of the liquid, whereby the premix becomes admixed with liquid in the tube and with liquid drawn into the open inlet end thereof as a result of the flow of the premix and whereby compression of the gas in the premix occurs, in which process (a) the liquid jet from the propulsive nozzle has a speed of 10 to 70 m/sec, (b) the distance between the regions of minimum cross-sectional area of the propulsive nozzle and mixing nozzle is from 1 to 10 times the minimum hydraulic diameter of the mixing nozzle, (c) the minimum cross-sectional area of the mixing nozzle is from 1.5 to 15 times the minimum cross-sectional area of the propulsive nozzle, (d) the minimum cross-sectional area of the tube located in the body of liquid is from 1.2 to 20 times the minimum cross-sectional area of the mixing nozzle, and (e) the length of the region of minimum cross-sectional area of the tube located in the body of liquid is up to 20 times the hydraulic diameter of the tube in that region.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of fibrids of a thermoplastic organic polymer material which comprises extruding strands of molten thermoplastic organic polymer material through orifices of die means/and introducing a propulsive jet of liquid flowing from a nozzle located in the center of said die means at a velocity of from 10 to 100 meters per second and flowing in the same direction as said strands with in a liquid-filled zone surrounding said orifices, passing said strands, the propulsive jet and entrained liquid immediately and directly into and through a tubular impulse exchange zone having a mean diameter of from 2 to 20 times the diameter of said nozzle of said propulsive jet and a length of from 2 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter to provide shear stresses acting on said strands within said impulse exchange zone, and causing said strands of thermoplastic organic polymer material to solidify by the cooling of said melt by said liquid and to be broken up into fibrids by said shear stresses within said impulse exchange zone. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the above process. This apparatus consists of a container filled with liquid, a nozzle for melt of said thermoplastic organic polymer material and which surrounds a nozzle or nozzles for the propulsive jet projecting parallel into said container and a tube having a diameter from 2 to 20 times the diameter of the nozzles for the propulsive jet and having a length from 2 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter, said tube being disposed at a short distance from the die orifices coaxially with an imaginary extension of the axis of the die so that said tube can accommodate the propulsive jet and the extruded thermoplastic organic polymer material leaving said die orifices. The orifices for the molten plastics material comprise a circle of round nozzles disposed around a propulsive nozzle or in the form of arcuate slots disposed concentrically with said propulsive nozzle.
