    Abstract: Production of pure N-dimethylacylamides having from two to four carbon atoms in the acyl radical by reaction of an excess of dimethylamine with an aliphatic carboxylic acid having two to four carbon atoms at elevated temperature and distillation of the N-dimethylacylamide formed, the distillation being carried out continuously in a column. Dimethylamine and the carboxylic acid in the molar ratio from 1.1:1 to 5:1 are introduced at from 80* to 220* C. and from 0.1 to 2 atmospheres in the absence of any catalyst into a mixture of N-dimethylacylamide and its carboxylic acid, the carboxylic acid content of the mixture corresponding at least to the amount of carboxylic acid present in the azeotropic mixture of the N-dimethylacylamide and its carboxylic acid. Ndimethylacylamides are used as solvents for polymers.

    Abstract: Ni-containing sodium molybdate/SiO2 catalysts are used to hydrogenate sulphur-containing mixtures of aldehydes, ketenes and esters such as are obtained in oxo systheses from olefins, CO and H2. In example 3 a feed stream containing inter alia n-butyhaladehyde, isobutyraldehyde, butyl formates and butyene esters is hydrogenated, the aldehydes and substantial portions of the esters being converted to the corresponding butanols.ALSO:In a method of making Ni-containing hydrogenation catalysts, an aqueous solution which is 0.5 to 3 molar in Si and having a ratio Na:Si of 0.7 to 7:1 and a Mo:Si ratio of 0.04 to 0.2:1 which has been prepared from water-glass and sodium molybdate has added to it while stirring such an amount of a 1 to 3 molar Mi salt solution that the amount of Mi added is from 10% by weight more or less equivalent to the amount of sodium contained in the solution and the resultant precipitate is separated from the solution, moulded and reduced in hydrogen at 300 to 500 DEG C. Additionally the catalyst may contain a small quantity of magnesium.

    Abstract: Purification of crude methanol contaminated by an iron carbonyl by treatment with molecular oxygen or with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a substance having a large specific surface area the iron carbonyl being oxidized. Specified substances having a large specific surface area, preferably from 100 to 1000 square metre/gram, include active carbon, optionally activated with a precious metal such as silver or palladium, and silica gel, diatomaceous earth, an alumina or a bleaching earth. Preferred amounts of molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide are specified. The process may be effected at a temperature in the range 0-200 DEG C. under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure optionally in the presence of specified substances which form complexes with iron.
