Abstract: A method for preparing formic acid formates (A) comprises supplying separate liquid streams of formic acid (stream I) and a metal formate (stream II) to a rectification column, with II supplied at the same height as I, or at a higher position. Water is separated as overhead and an (A)-containing sump product is recovered. The sump product is recovered as a melt containing less than 0.5 wt.% water.
