Abstract: 1310739 Polymerizing ethylene BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 27 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 41190/70 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized at 150‹ to 400‹ C. under high pressure in the presence of 1 to 50 molar parts per million of methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide. A mixture of oxygen and methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide in a weight ratio of 0À1 : 1 to 5 : 1 may be used as initiator, and conventional polymerization regulators may be present. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously in a tubular reactor. The product is stiff transparent polyethylene of density 0À924 to 0À935 g./c.c. In examples ethylene is polymerized in the presence of methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide and (1) acetone, (2) methyl ethyl ketone and (3) oxygen and methyl ethyl ketone.

Abstract: Production of homopolymers or copolymers of ethylene by homopolymerization of ethylene or copolymerization of mixtures of ethylene and other monomers at superatmospheric pressure and elevated temperature under the influence of a free radical generating polymerization initiator with or without a polymerization regulator. The initiator used is a mixture of (a) an initiator having a halflife of ten to 30 hours at 50 DEG C and (b) an initiator having a halflife of 0.2 to 10 hours at 50 DEG C, the halflife at 50 DEG C of initiator (a) being at least twice as long as that of initiator (b). Polymers having a high molecular weight and a low degree of branching are obtained in a fairly high yield.

Abstract: 1,227,454. Expanded ethylene/ester copolymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 15 Aug., 1968 [16 Aug., 1967], No. 39077/68. Headings C3C and C3P. A cross-linked expanded polymer is produced by mixing, e.g. in an extruder, a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene with a vinyl ester of a saturated acid or an ester-of an ethylenically unsaturated acid in the plastic condition with a polyisocyanate and an expanding agent under such pressure that the copolymer is not expanded followed by decompression to allow expansion. The ethylene copolymer may contain units derived from vinyl acetate or acrylic acid and n-hexyl, ethyl or n- or tert-butyl acrylate. The polyisocyanate may be 4,4 1 - dicyclohexylmethane di-isocyanate or its 3,3 1 - dimethyl derivative; others are also exemplified. The expanding agent may be a mixture of iso- and n-butane and/or dichlorodifluoromethane, propane or neopentane or azodicarbonamide or p,p 1 - oxybenzene - sulphohydrazide. Talc may be used as a nucleating agent. The copolymer mixture may also contain polybutene, polyisobutylene or polypropylene and zinc oxide.
