    Abstract: omega -Formylalkanecarboxylic esters are prepared by hydroformylation of alkenecarboxylic esters with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and under elevated pressure in the presence of cobalt carbonyl complexes, in which alpha , beta -unsaturated alkenecarboxylic esters are hydroformylated in the presence of 0.01 to 1 mol% of cobalt carbonyl complexes, calculated as cobalt, while maintaining a conversion of alpha , beta -unsaturated alkenecarboxylic esters of 10 to 70 %.

    Abstract: Prodn. of 2(5H)- furanones of formula (I) comprises reacting 3-formylcarboxylic acid or esters O = C(H)-CH(R1)-C(H)(R2) 0 = C(H)-C(H)(R1)-C(H)(R2)-(O)C-OR3 (II) in presence of acid catalyst at 100-450 deg. C. R1 and R2 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, 7-12C aralkyl or aryl; R3 = H, 1-12C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, 7-12C aralkyl or aryl. Acid catalysts are acidic oxides of B, AR, Si, P or metals of sub-groups IV-VI,or natural or synthetic zeolites. The catalysts are SiO2, Al2O3, B2O3, TiO2, V2O5, Cr2O6, or X Y or pentasil type zeolites. In (II), R1 and R2 are 1-6C alkyl and R3 = 1-12C alkyl. Reaction is at 200-350 deg. C and 1-50 (pref. 1-5) bar, and lactonisation is in presence of water and/or 1-4C alcohol. Where a heterogeneous catalyst is used, it is 0.5-20 wt. % on (II) for liq. phase reaction, or 0.1-10 (esp. 0.1-5)g (II) is used per g catalyst per hr., for gas phase reaction. Reaction is opt. in presence of 0.1-50 (pref. 0.5-20) moles solvent per mole (II).
