Abstract: The use of bisphenol compound(s) of formula (I) or their salts as drying aids for aqueous polymer dispersions is claimed; in which >= 1 of R = a sulphonic acid group (SO3H) and the rest = hydrogen (H); X = alkylene, carbonyl (CO), oxygen (O), sulphur (S) or imino (NR ); R = H or alkyl. Also claimed are (a) a method for producing a polymer powder by drying an aqueous polymer dispersion with addition of (I); and (b) the polymer powder per se.

Abstract: The production of polymer powder (I) suitable for the modification of mineral binder building materials, involves drying an aqueous polymer dispersion which forms films with a Tg of not above 30 degrees C, where before drying, the dispersion is treated with drying agents (IIa) which have a liquefying action on the mineral binder when it is mixed with water and ready for use; after drying, the powder (I) is treated with finely divided solid additive(s) (IIIa) which have a solidifying action on the binder/water mix. Alternatively, the dispersion is treated with solidifying driers (IIb) before drying, and the dried powder is treated with finely divided solid additives (IIIb) which have a liquefying action on the mix. Also claimed are: (i) polymer powder (I) obtained by this process; (ii) mineral binders containing (I); and (iii) dry mortar preparations containing 20-60 wt% mineral binder, 0.1-20 wt% (I) and up to 25 wt% conventional additives, the remainder consisting of sand, fillers, pigments and natural and/or synthetic fibres.

Abstract: Production of aqueous polymer dispersions (I) comprises radical-initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation of ethylenic monomers to give a dispersion of polymer (A) followed by radical polymerisation of other monomers in one or more subsequent stages (i) in the presence of polymer (A), with the following features: (a) polymer (A) has a Tg of Tg1, (b) the monomers polymerised in stages (i) are such that the isolated statistical (co)polymerisation of these monomers gives a polymer (i) with a Tg which approaches a limiting value of Tgi with increasing molecular weight, (c) for each Tg1 the difference Tgi - Tg1 = at least 10 deg C, (d) the amount of monomers polymerised in polymer (A) is 85-99.9 wt.% of the total amount (TM) polymerised in the entire process, (e) the total amount of monomers polymerised in all stages (i) is 0.1-15 wt.% of TM, (f) in each stage (i), the addition of monomer is carried out so that monomer conversion (polymerisation) (Ui) does not exceed 50 mol% of the amount already in the reactor at any time up to the end of addition, and (g) apart from monomers with two conjugated double bonds, the total amount of monomer used for the production of polymer (A) includes not more than 5 wt.% monomers with more than one unsaturated group. Also claimed are (1) dispersions (I) obtained by this process, (2) polymer powder obtained by spray drying (I), (3) polymers obtained by this process and (4) aqueous dispersions containing such polymers.

Abstract: The invention relates to storage-stable solutions of film-forming copolymers containing carboxyl groups, whose carboxyl groups are reacted to 5 to 80 % with glycidyl (meth)acrylate, in an inert organic solvent or solvent mixture, these solutions additionally containing a phosphoric acid ester of a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate and optionally o-phosphoric acid, and to a procedure for the manufacture of photosensitive coatings which contain photoinitiators, free-radical-polymerisable ethylenically unsaturated organic monomeric compounds, and if appropriate plasticisers, dyes, colour formers and inhibitors of thermal polymerisation, the manufacture of these coatings taking place in a storage-stable solution of this type. They are particularly suitable for the manufacture of offset printing plates.
