    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new mesoporous silica having respectively specific surface area and volume of the mesopores and useful as a molded article, a catalyst or a catalyst carrier by converting a silica precursor in a water-containing reaction medium containing a polymer dispersion liquid. SOLUTION: The mesopore of this mesoporous silica has a specific surface area of >=500m /g and a volume of >=1.0mL/g. The maximum size of the pare diameter distribution of the mesopore is preferably >=3nm. The obtained silica is preferably baked. The polymer dispersion liquid is preferably a cationic aqueous polymer dispersion liquid stabilized with a cationic emulsifier and/or a cationic comonomer (emulsifying agent or α,β-ethylenic unsaturated monomer having quaternary amine or ammonium structure). These emulsified polymers can be produced preferably by using a free-radical polymerization initiator having a cationic group.

    Abstract: Production of aqueous polymer dispersions (APD) by radical-initiated emulsion polymerisation of a mixture of : (I) radically polymerisable organo-silicon compounds which form silanols on hydrolysis with water; and (II) radically polymerisable compounds other than (I). The process comprises using at least part of (I) and at least part of (II) to make an aqueous emulsion in which the disperse phase consists mainly of droplets with a diameter of \}500 nm, then using this emulsion for polymerisation as above. Also claimed are APD obtained by this process.

    Abstract: Production of aqueous polymer dispersions (I) comprises radical-initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation of ethylenic monomers to give a dispersion of a first polymer followed by radical polymerisation of other monomers in one or more subsequent stages (i) in the presence of the first polymer, with the following features: (a) the first polymer has a Tg of Tg1, (b) the monomers polymerised in stages (i) are such that the isolated statistical copolymerisation of these monomers gives a first polymer with a Tg which approaches a limiting value of Tg1 with increasing molecular weight, (c) for each Tgi the difference Tgi - Tg1 = at least 10 deg C, (d) the amount of monomers polymerised in the first polymer is 85-99.9 wt.% of the total amount (TM) polymerised in the entire process, (e) the total amount of monomers polymerised in all stages (i) is 0.1-15 wt.% of TM, (f) in each stage (i), the addition of monomer is carried out so that monomer conversion (polymerisation) does not exceed 50 mol% of the amount already in the reactor at any time up to the end of addition, (g) apart from monomers with two conjugated double bonds, the total amount of monomer polymerised in all stages (i) contains no monomers with more than one ethylenically unsaturated group, and (h) apart from monomers with two conjugated double bonds, the total amount of monomer used for the production of the first polymer includes not more than 5 wt.% monomers with more than one unsaturated group. Also claimed are (a) dispersions (I) obtained by this process; (b) polymer powder obtained by spray drying (I); (iii) polymers obtained by this process; and (iv) aqueous dispersions containing such polymers.

    Abstract: Production of negative relief images by exposing to an image a recording plate comprising a backing and a photosensitive layer which is applied thereto which contains, as photosensitive compounds, esters of (1,2-naphthoquinone 2-diazide)-4- and/or -5-sulphonic acid or -carboxylic acid, heating the exposed plate, exposing the plate over the entire surface and developing the relief image by dissolving out the alkali-soluble constituents from the recording layer using an aqueous alkaline developer solution. The photosensitive layer of the recording plate contains a reaction product of a) 50 to 99% by weight of an oligomeric or polymeric condensation product of a1) 0.5 to 1 mol of an alkyl- and/or alkoxy-substituted mono- to trivalent hydroxybenzene, a2) 0 to 0.5 mol of phenol and a3) 0.5 to 1.5 mol of a C1-C12-carbonyl compound, where the sum of the amounts of a1) and a2) is 1 mol, b) 1 to 50% by weight of (1,2-naphthoquinone 2-diazide)-4-sulphonic acid or -carboxylic acid or a functional derivative of said acids, where up to 20% by weight of said compounds may be replaced by the corresponding esters of the 5-sulphonic or -carboxylic acid.
