    Abstract: Products of the condensation of phenolmonosulfonic acids, dihydroxydiphenyl sulfones, urea and formaldehyde can be obtained by (A) preparing a homogeneous reaction mixture in sulfuric acid from the phenolmonosulfonic acid and dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone in the molar ratio of from 3:1 to 10:1, with the proviso that the water content of the mixture is not more than 10% of the total weight of the components, and the mixture contains from 0.3 to 1.5 moles of sulfuric acid per mole of dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, at from 100 DEG to 180 DEG C., (B) subsequently, at from 40 DEG to 90 DEG C., carrying out a precondensation with 1 to 2 moles of formaldehyde and 0.5 to 1.5 moles of urea per mole of phenol units present in aqueous medium, (C) partially neutralizing the reaction mixture, (D) adding to the partially neutralized reaction mixture 0 to 0.5 mole of phenol per mole of phenol units present and then 0.1 to 0.8 mole of formaldehyde per mole of phenol units then present, (E) further condensing at from 40 DEG to 90 DEG C., (F) shifting the pH of the reaction mixture into the neutral range and (G) subsequently acidifying with a weak acid.

    Abstract: Products of the condensation of sulphonated phenols, urea, further organic nitrogen bases and formaldehyde, obtainable by (A) sulphonation of phenols using from 1.0 to 1.5 mol of sulphuric acid per mole of phenol and (B) condensation of these sulphonation products with (a) from 0.5 to 1.8 mol of urea per mole of phenol, (b) from 0.001 to 0.5 mol of at least one further organic nitrogen base per mole of phenol, and (c) from 1.0 to 3.0 mol of formaldehyde per mole of phenol. The condensation products are suitable as tanning agents in the production of leather and pelts and as spray assistants for redispersible polymer powders.

    Abstract: Benzophenonazo dyes have formula (I), in which the A ring may be benzenically annelated and a benzenically annulated A ring may be bridged; m is 1 or 2; K stands for the residue of a coupling component; Y stands for hydrogen or arylazo; X and Z represent independently from each other hydrogen or hydroxysulfonyl; R , R and R represent independently from each other hydrogen, halogen, C1-C12-alkyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, 2-hydroxyethylsulfonyl or C1-C4 alkoxy or, when m is 1 and Y stands for hydrogen, one of these substituents may also stand for the residue having formula (a), in which L stands for a chemical link or a bridging element and X , X , R , K and the A ring have the above-mentioned meaning; and R stands for hydrogen, halogen or C1-C4-alkoxy, provided the molecule contains at least one water-soluble rendering group. Also disclosed are new pyridone compounds, a process for producing bisulphonated pyridone compounds and the use of these new dyes for dyeing natural or synthetic substrates.
