Date Jul. 7, 1994There are described water-soluble condensation products of amino-containing compounds and crosslinkers, obtainable by reacting (a) polyalkylenepolyamines, polyamidoamines, ethylene-imine-grafted polyamidoamines, polyetheramines and mixtures thereof, with (b) monethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, salts, esters, amides or nitriles of monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, chlorocarboxylic acids and/or glycidyl compounds such as glycidic acid, glycidamide or glycidyl esters, and (c) at least bifunctional crosslinkers having a halo-hydrin, glycidyl, aziridine or isocyanate unit or a halogen atom as functional group, to form water-soluble condensation products having a viscosity of at least 100 mPas in a 20% strength by weight aqueous solution at 20 DEG C., processes for preparing the water-soluble condensation products by reacting the abovementioned compounds of groups (a), (b) and (c), and the use of the condensation products as drainage, flocculation and retention aids in papermaking.

    Abstract: Prepn. (A) comprises partially oxidising aq. glyoxal using nitric acid to give (B) which is then reacted with components (A), (C) and (D) to give condensn. prods. (I). (A) is 1 mol. melamine, dicyandiamide, (thio)urea or a mixt., (B) is 0.5-12 mols. (w.r.t. total molar amt. of components (B)) mixt. of glyoxylic acid and glyoxal in the molar ratio of 5:95-95:5, (C) is 0-3 mols. condensable cpd. contg. at least one phenolic or alcohol hydroxy gp., and (D) is 0-3 mols. condensable cpd. contg. an amido or amino gp. or an alkali metal or ammonium salt. Pref. 30-70 wt.% HNO3 is used in the partial oxidn. of glyoxal at 40-90 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as leather tanning agents (claimed). Also claimed is a process using (I) as tanning agents. The prepn. of (I) is a cheap, simple reproducible process. In an example, 1.04 g. sodium nitrite was added to 435 g. aq. glyoxal (40 wt.%) and the obtd. soln. was heated to 70 deg.C with 128 g. HNO3 (65 wt.%) being added over 5 hrs. THe soln. was then heated for 12 hrs. at 90 deg.C and then cooled to 60 deg.C. 63 g. melamine were added and the soln. was stirred for 1 hr. at 60 deg.C to give a clear, light-yellow soln. which was then spray dried (160-100 deg.C) to give 232 g. white powder. The powder was found to contain 2.60 mMol/g. glyoxylic acid, 2.60 glyoxal, 0.20 oxalic acid, 0.12 formic acid and 0.03 nitrat

    Abstract: Condensation products obtainable by condensation of a mixture containing, as essential components, (A) from 90 to 99.9 mol % of a mixture essentially comprising (a) from 30 to 99 mol % of melamin and (b) from 1 to 70 mol % of a substitute melamin of the formula I in which X, X' and X'' are selected from the group consisting of -NH2, -NHR and -NRR', and X, X' and X'' are not simultaneously -NH2, and R and R' are selected from the group consisting of hydroxy-C2-C10-alkyl, hydroxy-C2-C4-alkyl-(oxa-C2-C4-alkyl)n where n = 1 to 5, and amino-C2-C12-alkyl, or mixtures of melamins I, and (B) from 0.1 to 10 mol %, based on (A) and (B), of phenols which are unsubstituted or substituted by radicals selected from the group consisting of C1-C9-alkyl and hydroxyl, or of C1-C4-alkanes which are substituted by two or three phenol groups, or di(hydroxyphenyl) sulphones, or mixtures of these phenols, with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-generating compounds, where the molar ratio between melamin and formaldehyde is in the range from 1:1.15 to 1:4.5.
