Abstract: Spherical, expandible styrene polymers are obtd. by suspending rod-shaped granules of styrene polymers, opt. mixed with 10-90 wt.% of other thermoplastic synthetics, in water contg. a suspending agent, and keeping the granules moving, pref. by stirring, while heating the suspension at above the softening point, for >30 mins. (1-5 hours) and at a press of is not >14 bars (7-10 bars). Granules of uniform size can be obtd. in any required amt. and dimension. Prods. of grain dia. 0.5-0.6 mm, suitable for prodn. of thin-walled goods, can be prepd. Moulds can be filled easily with the spherical granules. The process is esp. suitable for preparing light-fast, pigmented expandible styrene polymers. Opt. the initial granules may contain additives, but no blowing agent; the spherical particles are later impregnatred with the blowing agent.

Abstract: Expandable polystyrene particle prepn. by suspension polymerisation of styrene and opt. further co-monomers in the presence of organic suspension stabilisers and blowing agents, takes place in the presence of 0.001-0.4 (0.01-0.2) wt. %, w.r.t. aq. phase of polymerisation batch, of phosphates and/or carbonates of Ca and/or Mg. Method is used in prodn. of foamed articles, by heating pre-foamed compsn. in moulds and sintering. Particles obtd. have a low internal water content, e.g. 0.3-0.8 wt. %. Agglomeration of single particles on foaming is prevented. Waste water pollution by organic cpds. can be reduced by 60% w.r.t. standard processes.
