Propylene is polymerized in the gaseous phase in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst system wherein purified propylene (which is suitable for achieving a catalyst activity of at least 3000 parts of polymer per part of catalyst per hour; a method of determining the catalyst activity is given in the Specification) is introduced in liquid form into the reaction zone, vaporized and polymerized therein, in the presence of a catalyst whose molar ratio of titanium compound to aluminium compound is in the range of 1: 0À5 to 1: 6. Unpolymerized monomer, on leaving the reaction zone, may be condensed and recycled with fresh monomer. Preferably the reaction is carried out at 10 to 100 atmospheres, 70 to 120‹ C., and using a catalyst comprising TiCl 3 , AlCl 3 and Al(Et) 3 . The homopolymerization of propylene is exemplified and the process is also applicable to the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene.

[Also in Division C3] Expanded olefin polymer mouldings are prepared by mixing particles of an expanded polymer of ethylene or propylene (whose X-ray crystallinity at 25‹ C. is more than 25%, the particles having a diameter of 3-50 mm. and a bulk density of 5-200 gm/litre) with a curable binder which is free of solvent, compressing the mixture by 5-70% of its original bulk volume in a mould and allowing to cure under pressure. In Example 1 expanded polyethylene particles are mixed with pentaerythritol triglycidyl ether and p,p-diaminodicyclohexylamine and is placed in a wooden mould lined with polyethylene sheeting (25 x 12À5 x 5 cm.) and having a lid of the same material. The contents of the mould are compressed to half their original volume and cured at room temperature. In Example 3 an elevated temperature (70‹ C.) is employed to cure the mixture. Instead of a mould the mixture may be fed between two conveyer belts to form a sheet, or to a channel provided by four conveyer belts to thereby provide a strand.

[Also in Division B5] A covering for playing fields consists of two layers, each of thickness 3-10 mm. and having on one side only parallel ribs, of height 1-5mm. and cross-sectional area 2-25 mm 2 , and spaced at 5-20mm., arranged with ribbed faces in contact with the ribs of one layer at 45‹-90‹ to the ribs of the other; each layer comprises a mixture of 100 parts by wt. bitumen, 50-120 parts by ethylene polymer and optionally up to 100 parts by wt. filler, which mixture has a mean elongation of 400-800% and a modulus of elasticity of 60-100 kg./cm 2 . The ribs may be of semicircular, square, hemielliptical part-circular, part-elliptical, rectangular or swallowtailed section. Each layer may have a different composition and thickness, e.g. the upper layer may contain a filler while the lower layer contains no filler. The ethylene polymer may be copoly (ethylene/n-butyl acrylate). The layers may be moulded at 200-280‹C or extruded at 100-160‹C and bonded by adhesive or by fusion.
