Abstract: The method produces a flat profiled composite body consisting of a base layer of plastics and a coating of sheet material, textile or tissue adhering to it. The coating is applied to the base layer under pressure while the latter is in the plastic state, the body being then shaped and cooled. Immediately on shaping the composite body, its edge is so shaped and/or trimmed that the outermost edge of the coating (4) is flush with that of the base layer (2) or protrudes beyond it. The shaping can be done by a two-part shaping tool, the top part of which is spring-mounted on a plate and guided by bars fixed to the latter and passing through it. These have stamping strips at their free ends, thrusting the edge into a recess in the bottom part of the tool in the second stage of the operation, and trimming off the edges in conjunctions with cutting edges on the bottom part.

Abstract: Thermoplastics reinforced with glass fiber mats contain from 10 to 60% by weight of such mats and from 5 to 60% by weight of a finely divided inert filler, the sum of the percentages by weight of glass fiber mats and filler being not greater than 70% by weight. The inert filler is a talc, having a foliated crystalline structure, which has a mean flake thickness of not more than 5 mu m and a ratio of mean flake diameter to mean flake thickness of from 5:1 to 500:1. When processing the thermoplastic filled with talc and glass fiber mats, homogeneous impregnation of the glass fiber mats with the filled thermoplastic is achieved.

Abstract: The sandwich is heated to a point above the m. pt. of the cladding and then pressed together while cooling. The cladding is selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile or maleic acid anhydride or methyl methacrylate, PVC, PVdC, polyamide, polycarbonate, polymethyl methacrylate reinforced with glass fibres, asbestos, carbon fibres and natural and/or synthetic fibres. The foam core is of polyurethane, urea - formaldehyde resin or phenol - formaldehyde resin. Provides a single - stage process for developing a sandwich laminate for boat or vehicle shells, giving a curved moulding, without adhesives.
