An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of carboxylic acid salts by reaction of an alcohol of formula (II) with an alkali hydroxide and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in water. The reaction is in the presence of a catalyst (I), at 120-280 deg C, and at a pressure between the vapor pressure of water and 75 bar. R = -(OCH2CH2OH) or -NR R ; and R , R = H, phenyl, -CH2CH2OH, 1-20 C alkyl or 2-5C dialkylamino.
