Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing glyoxal diacetal that uses a water- miscible alcohol and permits the continuous operation in high yield. SOLUTION: The reaction of 40-75 wt.% of glyoxal aqueous solution with a monohydric alcohol is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce a glyoxal diacetal. In this case, a liquid mixture including the alcohol and glyoxal in at least 15:1 molar ratio and water in an amount of ≤8 wt.% at the start of the reaction is brought into contact with an acid catalyst so that the alcohol used may not be distilled off over 5 wt.% until the concentration of the diacetal formed in the reaction mixture attains at least 70% of the equilibrium concentration. Abstract: Catalysts (I), for the production of carboxylic acid salts from alcohols, comprise (wt.%): (1) copper; or (2) copper (10-99.9), iron (0.01-90) and at least one other metal (0-50). Catalysts (I) are optionally doped. The hydroxide is prepared by precipitation of copper salt solutions (and/or copper and iron salt solutions with salts of at least one other metal (A)) by coprecipitation with a base and reduction with hydrogen. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of carboxylic acid salts by reaction of an alcohol of formula (II) with an alkali hydroxide and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in water. The reaction is in the presence of a catalyst (I), at 120-280 deg C, and at a pressure between the vapor pressure of water and 75 bar. R = -(OCH2CH2OH) or -NR R ; and R , R = H, phenyl, -CH2CH2OH, 1-20 C alkyl or 2-5C dialkylamino.

Abstract: Production of trialkylorthoformates (I) comprises producing diacetal (D) in a first stage, from an aqueous reaction mixture (R) of glyoxal, a monofunctional 1-6C alcohol (A), and an acid catalyst, where (D) is produced at at least 70% of equilibrium yield. In a second stage, isolated (D) is electrochemically oxidized in a liquid electrolyte (E) with (A), to give (I). Production of trialkylorthoformates (I) comprises: (1) preparing a diacetal (D) of glyoxal and a monofunctional 1-6C alcohol (A), where a liquid mixture (M1) containing water, (A), and glyoxal are brought in contact with an acid catalyst for as long a time such that the concentration of (D) in the reaction mixture (R) is at least 70% of the equilibrium concentration, followed by isolation of (D) from the reaction mixture; and (2) electrochemically oxidizing (D) in a liquid electrolyte (E) with (A) to give (I), followed by isolation of (I) from (E).
