The invention concerns benzoyl derivatives of formula (I) in which the substituents have the following meanings: L and M represent hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, C2-C6 alkenyl, C2-C6 alkinyl, C1-C4 alkoxy (these groups being optionally substituted by one to five halogen atoms or C1-C4 alkoxy), halogen, cyano, nitro, a -(Y)n-S(O)mR7 or -(Y)¿n-CO-R?8 group; Z represents a five to six-membered heterocyclic saturated or unsaturated group containing one to three heteroatoms selected from the group comprising oxygen, sulphur and nitrogen and which can optionally be substituted by halogen, cyano, nitro, a -CO-R8 group, C¿1?-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkyl halide, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkoxy halide, C1-C4 alkyl thio, C1-C4 alkyl thio halide, di-C1-C4 alkyl amino, phenyl optionally substituted by halogen, cyano, nitro, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkyl halide, or an oxo group which can be present in the tautomeric form as a hydroxy group, is substituted or, together with a condensation-bound phenyl ring which is optionally substituted by halogen or, cyano, nitro, C1-C4 alkyl or C1-C4 alkyl halide, with a condensation-bound carbocycle or with a condensation-bound second heterocycle which can optionally be substituted by halogen, cyano, nitro, C1-C4 alkyl, di-C1-C4 alkyl amino, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 alkoxy halide or a C1-C4 alkyl halide, forms a bicyclic system; Y represents O or NR?9¿; n is 0 or 1; m is 0, 1 or 2; R7 represents C¿1?-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkyl halide or NR?9R10; R8¿ represents C¿1?-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkyl halide, C1-C4 alkoxy or NR?9R10; R9¿ represents hydrogen or C¿1?-C4 alkyl; R?10¿ represents C¿1?-C4 alkyl; Q represents a cyclohexane-1,2-dione ring connected at position 2 and of formula (II) in which R?1, R2, R4 and R6¿ represent hydrogen or C¿1?-C4 alkyl, R?5¿ represents hydrogen, C¿1?-C4 alkyl or a -COOR?10¿ group, R3 represents hydrogen, C¿1?-C4 alkyl, C3-C6 cycloalkyl, these groups optionally including one to three of the following substituents: halogen, C1-C4 alkyl thio, C1-C4 alkoxy, or R?3¿ represents tetrahydropropanyl-3, tetrahydropropanyl-4 or tetrahydrothiopyranyl-3, or R?3 and R5¿ together form a bond or a three to six-membered carbocyclic ring. A process for controlling undesirable plant growth and for regulating plant growth consists of applying 4-methyl-5H-indeno[1,2-b]-pyridine and 1-methyl-9H-indeno[2,1-c]pyridines having formula (I), in which X, Y, Z and the residues R1 to R5 have the following meaning: R1 stands for hydrogen, alkyl, a COR6 group, in which R6 stands for alkyl; R2-R5 stand for: (a) hydrogen; (b) halogen; (c) nitro; (d) COOR6; (e) CONH¿2? and CONR?6R7¿, in which R?6 and R7¿ stand for alkyl; (f) optionally substituted alkyl; (g) alkenyl; (h) alkoxy; (i) hydroxy; (j) amino or NR6R7; (k) optionally substituted phenyl; X, Y stand for N, N?+-O- or CR8¿, in which R8 stands for hydrogen, C¿1?-C2-alkyl, COOH or COOR?6¿, with the proviso that only one nitrogen atom or N-oxide group be contained in the ring.
