Abstract: Systems and methods treat plasma carrying contaminants and cellular matter that are capable of entraining contaminants. The systems and methods separate cellular matter from the plasma by filtration, thereby removing contaminants entrained within the cellular matter. The system and methods add to the plasma a photoactive material. The systems and methods emit radiation at a selected wavelength into the plasma to activate the photoactive material and thereby eradicate the contaminant that is free of entrainment by cellular matter.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for inactivating pathogens in a body fluid, such as plasma, red cells, platelets, leukocytes, and bone marrow. The present invention minimizes adverse effects caused by the photosensitive agents while retaining the disinfecting activity of such agents and processes. Pursuant to the present invention, prior to irradiating a body fluid including a photoactive drug, the extracellular fluid, which in the case of blood components includes plasma proteins is at least substantially reduced. Additionally, after the irradiation process, the resultant body fluid is prevented from contacting additional extracellular fluid, e.g., plasma proteins, for a predefined period.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for creating a leukocyte rich sample from a mixed population of blood cells. The method comprises the steps of: separating an amount of blood into layers that include a buffy coat layer having a mixed population of blood cells including plasma and red blood cells; providing a chamber having an opening for receiving a fluid; causing the buffy coat layer to enter the chamber; centrifuging the chamber to separate the buffy coat layer into at least a plasma containing layer, a leukocyte containing layer, and a red blood cell containing layer; and separating the leukocyte containing layer from the other layers in the chamber.
