Abstract: A heat exchanger (38) is provided which may be used in a mass transfer device (20), such as an oxygenator or a dialyzer. The heat exchanger comprises a core (40) formed of a corrugated metal having a high thermal conductivity. Each of the corrugations of the core comprises substantially parallel side walls (70, 72). A first fluid, such as blood, is introduced onto the outside of the core. A second fluid, such as water, is introduced into the inside of the core. The first and second fluids will be in heat exchange relationship with each other and the flow of the fluids is substantially uniform resulting from the substantially parallel side walls of the corrugations. The core is formed by providing a flexible metal hose, annealing the flexible metal hose, compressing the annealed hose and expanding the compressed hose to a length that is substantially less than its original length but greater than its length during compression.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods of collecting blood cells use a first container (16) to collect and separate blood. A filtration system (14) is provided that has a first, dual purpose, flow path (38) that is initially used to convey plasma and platelets from the first container (16) to a pair of transfer/storage containers (30,32). A second flow path (34) leads to a temporary transfer container (28) through a filtration device (36). The dual purpose fluid path (38) is next used to convey blood cells, now substantially freed of undesired matter by the filtration device, from the temporary storage container (28) to a satellite storage container (18) along a path that bypasses the first container (16), thereby avoiding contamination of the filtered blood cells by residual undesired matter in the first container (16).

Abstract: Systems and methods for collecting blood substantially free of undesired matter assure that accurate crossmatching and typing of cellular blood components can be done prior to transfusion, even though the cellular components are collected and stored in different containers. The blood containing the undesired matter is collected in a blood collection container. The blood collection container includes a tube that is sealed for retaining samples of the collected blood for later analysis. The collected blood is conveyed out of the blood collection container for removal of undesired matter. The blood substantially free of the undesired matter is collected in a separate transfer container for storage. The distal end of the sealed tube containing the blood samples is attached to the transfer container, while the other end of the sealed tube is disconnected from the original blood collection container. This leaves the sealed tube and, with it, the retained blood sample, attached only to the transfer container, which now holds blood substantially free of undesired matter. Using the systems and methods, direct traceability can be assured between red blood cells made substantially free of white blood cells for transfusion and the donor from whom the red blood cells were obtained.

Abstract: 14 A flexible container arrangement useful for performing the magnetic separation of paramagnetic particles from a heterogeneous biological mixture. The flexible container arrangement of the invention includes two or more flexible containers (20) (22) having inlet and outlet ports. A flexible conduit (32) is connected between an outlet port of a first container and an inlet port of a second container. Another flexible conduit (32) is connected to an outlet port of the second container to allow for the discharge of fluid. The second flexible container (20) (22) is designed to provide for a reduction in fluid velocity at a rate of from about 1/7 to about 1/3 of the fluid velocity through the outlet conduit. The second container (20) (22) is also designed to provide a depth of fluid flow of about 0.02 to about 0.04 inch.
