    Abstract: Prepn. of low mol. wt. functional polymers comprises: (1) preparing a first quantity of a mixt. (M1) from at least one component chosen from olefinic unsatd. monomers (B) and cpds. (A) which do not copolymerise with (B) but can react to form a copolymerisable addn. reaction cpd.; (2) starting polymerisation by the addn. of initiators and opt. regulators; and (3) adding an additional quantity (M2) of the (A)/(B) mixt. during polymerisation, the compsn. of (M2) being the same as or different to (M1), with the provision that an oligomer or polymer (C) is dissolved in at least one of (M1) or (M2), and at least one of (M1) or (M2) contains a component (B). Also claimed are: (i) copolymers prepd. by the process, and (ii) binders for lacquers which contain these copolymers, as well as cross-linking agents chosen from isocyanates, melamine resins or epoxy cpds.

    Abstract: Polymer alloys contain (A) at least one cycloolefin polymer and (B) at least one polyarylether ketone, the quantity of (A) amounting to 1 to 99 wt% and the quantity of (B) amounting to 99 to 1 wt%, whereas both quantities added together form 100 wt% of the whole alloy. Such polymer alloys are useful as matrices for composite materials or for producting mouldings.

    Abstract: Low-mol. wt. copolymers (I) with a wt.-average mol. wt. (Mw) of less than 3500 contain at least 20 wt.% of components with branched side chains, obtd. by the reaction of (aa) glycidyl ester(s) of satd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with a tert. or quat. alpha -C atom; and (ab) at least two unsatd. comonomers, at least one of which contains at least one COOH gp., under radical copolymerisation conditions. Also claimed are (i) prepn. of (I) by heating component (aa) to 210-260 degrees C and reacting with component (ab) (which contains at least 2.0 wt.% of a COOH gp.-contg. monomer) in the presence of radical initiator(s), to a degree of conversion of at least 95 (pref. at least 97.5) %; (ii) polymer mixts. contg. (I), obtd. by reaction of (aa) and (ab) as above in at least two time intervals with a constant temp. in each interval, using at least two different reaction temps., at least one of which is in the range 210-260 degrees C; (iii) polymer mixts. contg. (I) and other polymers etc.; (iv) binders for coating materials contg. (I) or the above polymer mixts.; (v) coating materials contg. binders as above and hardeners such as amino resins, capped or uncapped polyisocyanates or organic cpds. with acid and/or anhydride gps.
