Abstract: Copolymers (I) of olefinic monomer(s) comprise an isomeric mixt. of esters of isobornyl alcohol with an alpha , beta -unsatd. acid. The isomeric alcohol mixt. contains: (a) not more than 92% isoborneol, (b) at least 3.5% iso-fenchyl alcohol, and (c) at least 1% pseudo-bornyl alcohol. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the prodn. of (I) by bulk polymerisation in the presence of aliphatic azo cpds., diacyl peroxide, alkyl per-esters, alkyl hydroperoxide, dialkyl peroxide or peroxy-di-carbonate as radical initiators; and (ii) a process for the prodn. of water-dilutable polyacrylate dispersions by: (A) dissolution of (I) in a water-dilutable organic solvent, followed by: (B) partial or complete neutralisation, and (C) dilution by adding water or stirring the soln. into water.

Abstract: Low-mol. wt. copolymers (I) with a wt.-average mol. wt. (Mw) of less than 3500 contain at least 20 wt.% of components with branched side chains, obtd. by the reaction of (aa) glycidyl ester(s) of satd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with a tert. or quat. alpha -C atom; and (ab) at least two unsatd. comonomers, at least one of which contains at least one COOH gp., under radical copolymerisation conditions. Also claimed are (i) prepn. of (I) by heating component (aa) to 210-260 degrees C and reacting with component (ab) (which contains at least 2.0 wt.% of a COOH gp.-contg. monomer) in the presence of radical initiator(s), to a degree of conversion of at least 95 (pref. at least 97.5) %; (ii) polymer mixts. contg. (I), obtd. by reaction of (aa) and (ab) as above in at least two time intervals with a constant temp. in each interval, using at least two different reaction temps., at least one of which is in the range 210-260 degrees C; (iii) polymer mixts. contg. (I) and other polymers etc.; (iv) binders for coating materials contg. (I) or the above polymer mixts.; (v) coating materials contg. binders as above and hardeners such as amino resins, capped or uncapped polyisocyanates or organic cpds. with acid and/or anhydride gps.

Abstract: A glass-fibre-reinforced cycloolefin polymer material comprises from 1 to 99% by weight of at least one cycloolefin polymer, in particular a norbornene-ethylene copolymer, and from 99 to 1% by weight of glass fibres. The absolute value for the refractive index difference (refractive index of glass of glass fibres minus refractive index of cycloolefin polymer) is at most 0.015 for each cycloolefin polymer, and the refractive index of the glass fibres is in the range from 1.510 to 1.560. The materials have good mechanical properties and good light transparency. The glass fibres employed preferably contain no sizes.

(A) is pref. modified by grafting with at least one monomer from (a) alpha,beta unsatd. organic acids and their derivs.; (b) styrenes, (c) organic silicon cpds. contg. unsatd. bond and hydrolysable gp.; (d) unsatd. epoxy cpds. (A) pref. contains at least one acyclic 1-olefin of formula (VIII) in addn. to the structural units of at lesat one monomer of formula (I)-(VII). (A) is pref. copolymer of polycyclic olefins of formula (I) or (III) and acyclic olefins of formula (VIII) and is pref. a copolymer of norborene and ethylene. (B) pref. contains 80-100 wt.% oxymethylene structural units. (B) pref. contains 99.5-95 wt.% oxymethylene structural units and 0.5-5 wt.% structural units derived from comonomers chosen from (a) 3-5 membered cyclic ethers, (b) 5-11 membered cylic acetals of tri- or tetroxane, (c) linear polyacetals. (B) pref. contains oxymethylene and oxyethylene structural units.

(I) are obtd.: (A) by reacting (a) 7-33C (cyclo)aliphatic mono-epoxides (a1), at least 20 wt% of which comprises monoepoxides with a tert. or quat. C atom with (b) 2-30C amines with at least 2 prim. or sec. amino gps. not attached directly to an aromatic ring; or (B) by reacting (a) 8-50C (cyclo)aliphatic diepoxides (a2) with (b) 4-30C prim. or sec. mono-amines with amino gps. not directly attached to aromatic rings, of which at least 20 wt% comprises mono-amines with at least one tert. or quat. C atom; or (C) by reacting (a1) with (b), the corresp. proportions of mono-amine and mono-epoxide with tert. or quat. Abstract: Polymer alloys of at least 2 components are claimed (I), contg. (A) 1-99 wt.% cyclo-olefin copolymer(s) and (B) 99-1 wt.% polyacetal. (A) contains units derived from monomer(s) (IIA-IIF) or (III); R1-R8 = H or 1-8C alkyl; n = 2-10. (A) is modified by grafting with (a) alpha, beta-unsatd. acid (derivs.), (b) styrenes, (c) unsatd. organo-Si cpds. with hydrolysable gps. and/or (d) unsatd. epoxides; in addn. to monomer units as above, (A) contains other units derived from acyclic olefin(s) of formula R9R11C=CR10R12 (V) (with R9-R12 = H or 1-8C alkyl); (A) is a copolymer of monomers (IIA) or (IIC) and monomer (V), pref. a norbornene/ethylene copolymer; (B) contains 80-100 (pref. 99.5-95) wt.% units of formula -(CH2O)-, and pref. 0.5-5 wt.% other units derived from (e) 3-, 4- or 5-membered cyclic ethers, (f) 5- to 11-membered cyclic acetals other than tri- or tetra-oxan or (g) linear polyacetals; pref., (A) is a copolymer with units of formula -CH2CH2- and (IV), and (B) is a copolymer with units of formula -(CH2O)- and -(CH2CH2O)-; pref., (I) also contains a polymer (A) modified by grafting as above, esp. with maleic anhydride. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as matrix materials for composites or for the prodn. of moulded prods. (claimed). The invention provides alloys of cyclo-olefin polymers and polyacetals with improved melt flow properties, improved mechanical properties and reduced water absorption.

(A) which do not copolymerise with (B) but can react to form a copolymerisable addn. reaction cpd.; (2) starting polymerisation by the addn. of initiators and opt. regulators; and (3) adding an additional quantity (M2) of the (A)/(B) mixt. during polymerisation, the compsn. of (M2) being the same as or different to (M1), with the provision that an oligomer or polymer (C) is dissolved in at least one of (M1) or (M2), and at least one of (M1) or (M2) contains a component (B). Also claimed are: (i) copolymers prepd. by the process, and (ii) binders for lacquers which contain these copolymers, as well as cross-linking agents chosen from isocyanates, melamine resins or epoxy cpds.
