    Abstract: Low-mol. wt. copolymers (I) with a wt.-average mol. wt. (Mw) of less than 3500 contain at least 20 wt.% of components with branched side chains, obtd. by the reaction of (aa) glycidyl ester(s) of satd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with a tert. or quat. alpha -C atom; and (ab) at least two unsatd. comonomers, at least one of which contains at least one COOH gp., under radical copolymerisation conditions. Also claimed are (i) prepn. of (I) by heating component (aa) to 210-260 degrees C and reacting with component (ab) (which contains at least 2.0 wt.% of a COOH gp.-contg. monomer) in the presence of radical initiator(s), to a degree of conversion of at least 95 (pref. at least 97.5) %; (ii) polymer mixts. contg. (I), obtd. by reaction of (aa) and (ab) as above in at least two time intervals with a constant temp. in each interval, using at least two different reaction temps., at least one of which is in the range 210-260 degrees C; (iii) polymer mixts. contg. (I) and other polymers etc.; (iv) binders for coating materials contg. (I) or the above polymer mixts.; (v) coating materials contg. binders as above and hardeners such as amino resins, capped or uncapped polyisocyanates or organic cpds. with acid and/or anhydride gps.

    Abstract: A glass-fibre-reinforced cycloolefin polymer material comprises from 1 to 99% by weight of at least one cycloolefin polymer, in particular a norbornene-ethylene copolymer, and from 99 to 1% by weight of glass fibres. The absolute value for the refractive index difference (refractive index of glass of glass fibres minus refractive index of cycloolefin polymer) is at most 0.015 for each cycloolefin polymer, and the refractive index of the glass fibres is in the range from 1.510 to 1.560. The materials have good mechanical properties and good light transparency. The glass fibres employed preferably contain no sizes.

    Abstract: Polymer blend contg. at least two components, (A) and (B) comprising (A) 1-99 wt.% at least one cycloolefin polymer and (B) 99-1 wt.% at least one polyacetal. (A) is pref. modified by grafting with at least one monomer from (a) alpha,beta unsatd. organic acids and their derivs.; (b) styrenes, (c) organic silicon cpds. contg. unsatd. bond and hydrolysable gp.; (d) unsatd. epoxy cpds. (A) pref. contains at least one acyclic 1-olefin of formula (VIII) in addn. to the structural units of at lesat one monomer of formula (I)-(VII). (A) is pref. copolymer of polycyclic olefins of formula (I) or (III) and acyclic olefins of formula (VIII) and is pref. a copolymer of norborene and ethylene. (B) pref. contains 80-100 wt.% oxymethylene structural units. (B) pref. contains 99.5-95 wt.% oxymethylene structural units and 0.5-5 wt.% structural units derived from comonomers chosen from (a) 3-5 membered cyclic ethers, (b) 5-11 membered cylic acetals of tri- or tetroxane, (c) linear polyacetals. (B) pref. contains oxymethylene and oxyethylene structural units.

(A) which do not copolymerise with (B) but can react to form a copolymerisable addn. reaction cpd.; (2) starting polymerisation by the addn. of initiators and opt. regulators; and (3) adding an additional quantity (M2) of the (A)/(B) mixt. during polymerisation, the compsn. of (M2) being the same as or different to (M1), with the provision that an oligomer or polymer (C) is dissolved in at least one of (M1) or (M2), and at least one of (M1) or (M2) contains a component (B). Also claimed are: (i) copolymers prepd. by the process, and (ii) binders for lacquers which contain these copolymers, as well as cross-linking agents chosen from isocyanates, melamine resins or epoxy cpds.
