    Abstract: The invention relates to chiral oxirane derivatives of the general formulae (I) and (II) in which, for example: R is a straight-chained or branched alkyl radical with 2 to 22 C atoms (with or without an asymmetrical C atom) in which one or more -CH2- groups may also be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -CH=CH-, -C=C-, DELTA , 1,4-cyclohexylene or -Si(CH3)2- with the proviso that oxygen atoms may not be directly bonded together and/or one or more H atoms of the alkyl radical may be substituted by -F, -Cl, -Br, -CN, -SCN, OCN or N3; n is 1 to 5; X, Y are each hydrogen or together an oxy group, R (-A )a(-M )b(-A )c(-M )d(-A )e, and R (-A )a(-M )b(-A )c(-M )d(-A )e are mesogenic radicals. The compounds of the invention are suitable for use in liquid crystal mixtures.

    Abstract: Novel chiral oxazolidinones are of formula (I) or (II). R1 = opt. branched 1-16C alkyl or 3-16C alkenyl each opt. contg. asymmetric C atoms, etc.; R2 and R3 = H, 1-12C alkyl (opt. substd.) phenyl or cyclohexyl (opt. substd.); j, l and n = 0, 1 or 2; k and m = 0 or 1 with the following provisos: when j and/or l = 0, k = 0; when n = 0, m = 0; and j+l+n = 1-3; A1 and A2 = Ph, cyclohexyl, pyrimidin-2- or 5-yl, pyridin-2- or 3-yl, pyridazin-3-yl, pyrazin-2-yl, thiophen-2-yl, etc.; A3 = Ph, cyclohexyl, pyrimidin-2- or 5-yl, pyridin-2- or 3-yl or pyridazin-3-yl; M1 and M2 = -CO.O-, -O.CO-, -CH2.CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CH2.O- or -O.CH2-; and X = -O.CH2-, -CH2-, -C(O).O-, -O.C(O)-, -CH2.O- or -C2H4-. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) and (II) as doping agents for ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. is claimed, with the mixt. pref. having a smectic phase. Also claimed are electrooptical switches and display devices which contain a liq. crystal mixt. including (I) or (II) together with 2 electrodes, 2 carrier plates and at least one orientation layer. (I) and (II) impart short switching times to the liq. crystal mixts. and are suitable for producing helix compensation in the mixts. Also, addn. of small amts. of (I) to tilted smectic phases causes strong twisting in the cholesteric phase.

    Abstract: Chiral substituted tartarimides, a process for their preparation and their use as doping agents in liquid-crystal mixtures. The new chiral N-substituted tartarimides which are esterified on both of the OH groups (pyrrolidinediones) are characterized by the general formula (I) (I) in which the symbols have the following meaning: R2 denotes linear or branched (C1-C16)-alkyl, it being possible for one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups to be replaced by O or S, or, if n1=1, also denotes F, Cl, Br or CN, A1 and A2 independently of one another denote 1,4-phenylene, diazine-2,5-diyl, diazine-3,6-diyl, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,3-dithiane-2,5-diyl or 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, it being also possible for these groups to be at least monosubstituted by F, Cl, Br, CN and/or (C1-C12)-alkyl (if appropriate one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups are replaced by O atoms), denotes CO-O, O-CO, CH2-CH2, OCH2, CH2O, CH=N, N=CH or N=N, n1 and n3 independently of one another denote zero, 1 or 2, n1 and n3 not being zero at the same time, n2 denotes zero or 1, n1+n2+n3 being not more than 4, and R1 denotes linear or branched (C1-C16)-alkyl or R3-(A1-)n1(B-)n2(A2-)n3, in which R3 is H or R2. These compounds are preferably used as doping agents in twistable liquid-crystal mixtures, in which they effect temperature compensation and twisting.
