Abstract: Novel cyclohexylphenylpyrimidines of formula (I) are claimed as is also their prepn. by (i) alkylating 4-(4-trans-alkylcyclohexyl) benzamides (pref. with dialkyl sulphates) to give imidoethers; (ii) reacting the imidoethers with ammonia to give amidines which are then converted by reaction with 1,3-dicarbonyl cpds. to give the corresp. pyrimidine cpds.. In (I) R1 = opt. branched (a) chiral 2-16C alk(en)yl opt. with 1 or 2 non-neighbouring CH2 gps. replaced by -0-, -S-, -C0-, -C0.0-, -0.C0-, -Si(Me)2- or - C(Me)2- and opt. with one or more of the alk(en)yl H atoms replaced by F and opt. with the terminal CH3 gp. replaced by cyclopropylmethylene and R2 = opt. branched (a) chiral 1-10 (pref. 2-8)C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use is claimed of (I) as components of liq. crystal mixts.. In partic. ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. of 2-20 components are claimed which contain (I) pref. in an amt. of 1-25 mol.%, such mixts. being used in switching or display devices. (I) have low m.pt. and wide liq. crystal phases while still having suitable electro-optical properties (viscosity and switch-times and -angles) in liq. crystal mixts.. USE/ADVANTAGE - The use of (I) and (II) as doping agents for ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. is claimed, with the mixt. pref. having a smectic phase. Also claimed are electrooptical switches and display devices which contain a liq. crystal mixt. including (I) or (II) together with 2 electrodes, 2 carrier plates and at least one orientation layer. (I) and (II) impart short switching times to the liq. crystal mixts. and are suitable for producing helix compensation in the mixts. Also, addn. of small amts. of (I) to tilted smectic phases causes strong twisting in the cholesteric phase.

Abstract: Cyclohexylphenylpyrimidines of the formula (I) anched, chiral or achiral alkyl or alkenyl having 2 to 16 carbon atoms, in which one or two nonadjacent -CH2- groups may be replaced by -0-, -S-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -Si(CH3)2- or -C(CH3)2-, and in which one or more hydrogen atoms of the alkyl or alkenyl radical may be replaced by fluorine atoms, and in which the terminal CH3 group of the alkyl may also be replaced by R2 is straight-chain or branched, chiral or achiral alkyl having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, are particularly suitable components for ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures since they result in favorable properties, such as, for example, high contrast, when used in electrooptical switching and display devices.
