Abstract: The new esters of a chiral alcohol with a mesogenic carboxylic acid are characterised by the general formula (I) in which the symbols have the following meaning: R is unsubstituted or substituted (C6-C18)aryl, cyclo(C5-C12)alkyl or a mono- or dinuclear five- or six-membered heteroaryl ring, R radicals independently of one another are R or H or (C1-C5)alkyl, it being possible for one CH2 group to be replaced by O, and MC is the radical of a mesogenic monocarboxylic acid molecule after elimination of an OH group, with the exception of compounds in which R is phenyl and R is H. These esters are preferably employed as doping substances in twistable liquid-crystalline phases, in which they cause temperature compensation and a high degree of twisting.
