Abstract: The invention is a tape reel brake which is mounted in a well in the top of a tape reel hub. The well is inside the tape bearing surface of the hub. The brake is mounted to be compliantly biased away from the base of the well. The hub is seated against a first inside surface of a tape cartridge housing. The hub and brake are seated in the tape cartridge such that teeth on the periphery of the brake are biased against the opposite inside surface of the cartridge housing about the periphery of an opening therein. The biasing of the brake against the opposite inside surface both prevents the rotation of the reel and shields out dust when the tape cartridge is removed from a tape drive. To rotate the reel, a tape drive clutch enters the opening in the opposite inside surface and depresses the brake into the well to mate with a smaller diameter portion of the hub or a recessed portion of the brake. The hub is always maintained on the inside surface of the housing, thereby eliminating lateral motion which could disrupt the tape path.

Abstract: A track following servo system is disclosed for use with magnetic tape systems in which magnetic servo track patterns contain transitions recorded at more than on azimuthal orientation across the width of the servo track. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern is read by a servo read head whose width is small compared to the servo track pattern. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, the servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, which provides the additional advantages of superior immunity to position sensing errors caused by defects or temporal variations in the servo read head, defects in the servo pattern on the tape, wear of the head or tape, or debris collection on the head or tape.Position sensing with this system is achieved by deriving a ratio of two servo pattern intervals and therefore is insensitive to tape speed during reading. The servo patterns may include spacing intervals recognizable for error detection and correction purposes. Servo tracks are recorded using a patterned multiple gap servo write head whose magnetic gaps have geometries appropriate to generate thedesired servo patterns. The patterned gaps of the servo write head are produced by photolithographically defined electroplating of permalloy on a ferrite ring head structure.

Abstract: A ramp structure that is designed to reduce the amount of thermal expansion induced misalignment (changes in ramp-disk spacing) between load/unload ramps and data storage disks of a data storage device. The ramp structure has a rigid support structure and ramp units attached to the rigid support structure. The ramp units are made of plastic that is particularly suited for use as load/unload ramps. The ramps are mechanically connected only by means of being attached to the rigid support structure. The data storage disks are attached to a spindle. The rigid support structure is made of a material that has a thermal expansion coefficient that is equal to the thermal expansion coefficient of the spindle and any other parts to which the disks are attached. As a temperature change causes the spindle to expand and the spacing between disks to change, the rigid support structure expands at the same rate, thereby maintaining alignment between the ramps and the disks. Preferably, each ramp unit has two ramps, but each ramp unit can have a single ramp.

Abstract: A magnetic disk with nonmagnetic information encoded under, in or above the magnetic layer of the disk is described along with the disk drive using the magnetic disks. The information may be stored as a series of laser-written marks (e.g., bumps, oxidized spots or spots with altered reflectivity) upon the surface(s) of each disk of the disk stack. The set of marks may be a series of laser bumps which serve a dual purpose as a landing zone or contact start/stop (CSS) zone for the slider and as encoded identifying information. During the manufacturing process for disk drives containing the disks, each disk's identifier can be read using outboard equipment such as an HRF tester or by means contained in the drive itself. Each disk identifier can then be stored magnetically in a special region of the hard disk reserved for use by the drive and/or within the flash memory of the hard drive. The drive can then communicate the identifier(s) to a host computer using the conventional communication hardware and firmware. In this way selected information such as the origin, batch number, date of manufacture, serial number, etc. of any disk can be obtained when needed as, for example, as part of failure analysis.

Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetic tape media having addressing data information superimposed on prerecorded track following servo information. The servo information is recorded in magnetic flux transition patterns defining at least one longitudinal servo track. A servo burst pattern of at least two repeated pairs of non-parallel magnetic flux transitions is provided, at least one of which transitions is slanted or otherwise continuously longitudinally variable across the width of the servo track. At least two transitions of the repeated pairs are shifted longitudinally with respect to other of the transitions, the shifted transitions comprising the superimposed addressing data information. Also disclosed is a magnetic tape media having prerecorded combined servo and data information recorded in repeated pairs of magnetic flux dual transitions, at least one of the repeated pairs of dual transitions having a different width with respect to other of the transitions, the different width transitions comprising data information.

Abstract: A disk file with substantially reduced head-disk spacing and corresponding improvement in recording performance uses a disk coated with a film of conventional high viscosity lubricant, a lubricant reservoir for replenishing the lubricant on the disk over the life of the file, and a transducer carrier with feet which ski on the high viscosity liquid film. The file does not include any means for recirculating the lubricant since the lubricant spins off the disk at a relatively low rate due to its high viscosity. The lubricant reservoir contains a very small amount of lubricant and thus may be maintained inside the substantially sealed disk file. In one embodiment of the invention, the sealed disk file is essentially evacuated. The operation of the disk file in a near vacuum environment is possible because, unlike conventional disk files, air is not required to support an air-bearing head-disk interface and the high vapor pressure of the relatively high molecular weight lubricant prevents its evaporation.

Abstract: A data recording disk file of the liquid-bearing type has an improved head-disk interface provided in by a transducer carrier (100) with new properties. The carrier (100) supports a conventional head (109) for reading and writing data to the disk (130). The carrier has an air-bearing surface (110,112) near its front end, a ski pad (118) near its rear end, and a plurality of ski feet or struts (120,122) which support the air-bearing surface off the liquid film (146) of the disk when the disk file is not operating. The air-bearing surface is in the form of a pair of air-bearing rails (110,112) located outboard of the rear ski pad so that no air-bearing effect occurs in the rearward region of the carrier to assure the skiing action of the rear ski pad. As operational speed is approached the air-bearing lifts the struts off the disk and the rear ski pad is the sole ski foot on the liquid film. The rear ski pad has a convexly shaped leading edge which is wider than its trailing edge to minimize static friction and lubricant thinning during skiing, and the angle between the leading and trailing edges of the pad is selected to enable the pad to ski over the wide ranges of carrier-disk velocity which occur as the carrier moves from disk ID to OD.
