Abstract: Digital image data representing first and second images I1 and I2 with overlapping image content are processed to produce digital image data representing a composite image I3 spanning the overlap region O. Image data which corresponds to the overlap region in the first and second images I1 and I2 is processed such that the proportions of first image data and second image data contributing to the overlap region O in the composite image I3 vary along the length L of the overlap region O. Preferred methods include defining a non-straight line extending along the length of the overlap region O, and performing the processing by reference to the non-straight line such that the ratio of the proportions of first and second image data contributing to the overlap region O varies for different sections of the overlap region O along the length L.

Abstract: Assisting a user of a graphical user interface (GUI) with the task of positioning an input device pointer (or otherwise indicating a position selection) when selecting a GUI element such as a button or other icon. The software identifies those GUI elements which are valid selections for the current application state, and a predefined set of characteristics for the identified GUI elements (and which can include the distance between the pointer and each element, and weightings associated with each element, e.g. based on statistics of previous user interaction sequences) are compared to predict which will be the next that the user will interact with. The pointer is moved to the position of the predicted GUI element, or emphasis is added to it. The user then decides whether this GUI element is required. The invention has particular advantages for: apparatus which use eye tracking mechanisms for user input; apparatus which have a relatively small area for displaying a GUI; apparatus having an input device which is hard to control; users of computing apparatus who have physical limitations on their ability to control input devices.

Abstract: A reticle for an object measurement system has a pattern 10 having a plurality of pairs of contrasting elements in the form of black (11..14) and white (21..24) wedges. Each black/white wedge pair defines a path towards a pattern origin 19 such that an edge of an object 50 occluding the path causes a change in contrast adjacent an edge point along the path. The pattern has a series of Gray-coded elements 15 associated with each pair of black/white wedges. The Gray-coded elements are indicative of an absolute coordinate of each edge point at which an object edge crosses a path. A series of triangles 16 associated with each pair of black/white wedges, whose absolute coordinates are known, allow a measurement system to provide accurate coordinates for each edge point.

Abstract: The invention relates to networked computer systems, and particularly to temporary restriction of access to such systems. A computer system (2) connectable over a network to a plurality of users comprises normal access control means for restricting user access to the system (2), the control means comprising a user authentication procedure (44, 46) in which at logon the user's identity is compared with a first definition of authorised users; system-wide profile means referenced (72) by all users of the system (2) at logon; and temporary access control facilitation means for temporarily preventing access to the system (2) by a normally authorised user or users. The facilitation means allow a privileged user of the system (2) to create a second definition of temporarily unauthorised users, which is referenced by the system-wide profile means at logon.

Abstract: Tie-points for use in image registration are automatically identified, such as when a final image is desired to have a wider field of view than is obtainable by conventional cameras 10,20. A plurality of infra-red signal transmitters 30 are positioned within a scene, each acting as a self-identifying tie-point when captured on an infra-red camera. The coordinates of tie-points identified from the infra-red image are then associated with images captured by visible image cameras and can be used by image warping software for combining the visible images.

Abstract: Display of video or image data is controlled in dependence on content classification information which is integrated within the data by means of invisible digital watermarking techniques. A controller decodes the watermarked content codes and then prevents display of certain material, by overlaying the display with blanking data, if the codes match certain stored codes which the controller has been set to respond to. The codes are more difficult for unauthorised persons to detect and remove than other embedded codes would be.
