    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relatively position images to each other and to identify an appropriate connection line by positioning plural signal transmitters within the visual field overlapping area of plural cameras and making them tie points in the images. SOLUTION: Plural infrared transmitters 30 generate tie points to identify a connection line when a pair of cameras 10 and 20 having visual fields which are different but overlap on each other fetches images and connects them with an appropriate line. In such a case, each camera unit has a beam splitter 50 that makes light from the same viewpoint of a scene direct to both a camera 60 responding to visible spectrum light and an infrared camera 70 to respond to a signal from the transmitters 30 and to identify a tie point, and the tie point is visible in an image from the camera 70. A filter in an image processing component 80 eliminates the whole infrared radiation except the tie point according to the minimum intensity threshold. Thus, the tie point is outputted as image coordinates of a bright point.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To judge whether earthquake data frame discrepancy is within an allowance range or not by selecting the width of an image as symmetry axis, dividing data around the symmetry axis, making the first and second data sets and comparing the data sets with a preset collating reference. CONSTITUTION: The results of earthquake testing groups are stored in an outside memory 210, prepared and modified to predict the image of earthquake data with specific symmetry around the axis. After they are modified, a device 200 is activated to read one frame of the earthquake data from a device 210 into an inside memory 220. An axis detector 240 accesses to the earthquake data and selects the axis as a symmetry axis. The maximum strength position is judged by a peak detecting technique. The earthquake data frame is sent to an edge detector 250 and a data point showing discontinuity in the data is identified, stored in an edge list and sent to a dividing means 260. The second edge list and the first edge list are collated by a collating device 160.

    Abstract: Provided are a method and a software-implemented mechanism for assisting a user of a graphical user interface (GUI) with the task of positioning an input device pointer (or otherwise indicating a position selection) when selecting a GUI element such as a button or other icon. The software identifies those GUI elements which are valid selections for the current application state and so are potentially the next element that the user will interact with. Then a predefined set of characteristics for the identified GUI elements are compared to predict which of these GUI elements will be the next GUI element that the user will interact with. The result of this prediction is indicated by moving the pointer to the position within the GUI of the predicted GUI element or by adding emphasis to the predicted GUI element. The user then decides whether this GUI element is required.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to the detection of errors in seismic data and in particular to apparatus for detecting errors in frames of seismic data that can be presented as images. Due to the techniques used for collecting seismic data, an image produced to represent that data will typically be expected to exhibit an inherent symmetry about an axis. The apparatus of the present invention comprises a storage device for storing a frame of seismic data which can be presented as an image, a selection device for selecting an axis within the image as the axis of symmetry, and a divider for dividing the data about the axis of symmetry to create first and second sets of data. Further it includes a comparison means for comparing the sets of data according to preselected matching criteria to determine, based on the degree of matching, whether the extent of mismatch in the frame of data is within a predetermined tolerance.

    Estimating grain size in geological samples

    Abstract: A method for estimating the grain size in geological samples such as cores is achieved by a data processing system wherein data of a geological sample is retrieved from a storage device, the storage device storing data of the geological sample which incorporates least one characteristic varying with the grain size of the sample. Responsive to a selection of a portion of the data, a subset of the data corresponding to the selected portion is retrieved, the subset of data incorporating said at least one characteristic varying with the grain size. Next, a set of variations of said at least one characteristic in said subset of the data is evaluated in order to determine an estimate of the average grain size of the portion with respect to a dominant variation of said set. In preferred embodiments, a digital image of the geological sample representative of said data is displayed on a display device in order to allow a user to select the portion of the image to be evaluated. Then the determined estimate is made available to the user.
