Abstract: A method for operating a tape storage system, readback signals are simultaneously received from a set of data readers DR1 reading from data tracks DT1, DT2DT8, DT9 of a set of adjacent data tracks extending along a longitudinal extension (x) of a tape storage medium. Each data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9 of the set has a width wDT and each data reader DR1, DRi, DR9 of the set has a width wDR equal to or less than the width wDT of a data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9. Simultaneously to receiving the readback signals from the set of data readers DR1, DRi, DR9 readback signals are received from a servo reader arrangement SRA1, SRA2 containing at least one servo reader SR1, SR2, SR3, SR4 arranged laterally offset from one of the data readers DR1, DR9 by less than the width wDT of a data track DT1, DT2DT8, DT9. At least one of lateral position, velocity, gain and timing information is determined dependent on the readback signals of each servo reader SR1, SR2 in the servo reader arrangement SRA1.

Abstract: A multi-channel current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) magnetoresistive read sensor 1 comprises a stack of layers 11-15 extending along a stacking direction z of the stack, and an edge surface S of the stack that is parallel to the stacking direction and further forms at least part of a bearing surface of the read sensor. The stack of layers comprises: a first contact layer 15, a free ferromagnetic layer 14, a non-magnetic layer 13, a spin injection ferromagnetic layer 12 and a second contact layer 11. The stack of layers further comprises a series of structures 30, each structure formed in both the first contact layer and the free layer. An edge surface of each of the structures is level with the edge surface of the stack and the series of structures extends along a direction x that is parallel to the bearing surface and perpendicular to the stacking direction. Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises a servo band SB along a longitudinal extension x of the tape TP for determining positional information. The servo band comprises a set of servo tracks ST1-6 arranged next to each other. Each servo track of the set contains a pseudo noise sequence PN_A-C of symbols, where the pseudo noise sequences of servo patterns of adjacent servo tracks are different from each other. The set of servo tracks contains at least three servo tracks with different pseudo noise sequences. The waveforms of adjacent servo tracks may be orthogonal to each other in the time domain. The servo patterns may contain additional information such as longitudinal position, manufacturing information or a servo band identifier. A tape head contains a servo reader SR where the width of the reader wSR is at least a width of a servo track wST. A read back signal of the servo reader is used for adjusting a lateral position of a tape head.

Abstract: A write head 108 comprises a yoke 110 having at least a first and a second gap 112, 114 and a coil 116 for producing a magnetic field at each gap. The coil comprises a plurality of windings 118, 120 which are arranged to produce the same magnetic field strength at each gap and/or along each gap by use of a proximity effect between the windings and a respective gap. Gaps may be arranged symmetrically about a first line 214 and the windings 209, 209, 213, 213 can be arranged in a pattern symmetrically about a second line 212 where the first and second lines are offset from each other. The distance between neighboring winding portions may vary and the windings may be non-parallel to each other. The write head can be used for writing servo patterns on magnetic tape.

Abstract: A tape head 1 is adapted for reading and/or writing to a magnetic tape and has a tape-bearing surface comprising a transducer area 30 and a cavity 51, 52 adjacent to the transducer area. The transducer area comprises at least one transducer that is a read and/or write element. The cavity is open on the tape-bearing surface, and extends parallel to the transducer area, transversally to a longitudinal direction of circulation of the tape, such that an opening of the cavity faces the tape, in operation. The cavity is further dimensioned and arranged with respect to the transducer area to create sub-ambient pressure upon circulation of the tape. Air bleed slots may connect to the cavity and a lateral edge surface or another cavity. The transducer area may form a crenellated structure so that the transducers protrude. The tape head may have a bevelled 72b or rounded edge.

Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one servo band (SB) along a longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) for supporting to determine positional information. The servo band (SB) comprises a first servo subband (SB1) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (1) and a second servo subband (SB2) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) next to the first servo subband (SB1). The second servo subband (SB2) contains a set of servo tracks (STx) extending along the longitudinal extension (x) of the tape storage medium (TP) and arranged next to each other, wherein each servo track (STx) of the set contains a servo pattern of magnetic transitions representing a waveform when being read, and wherein the waveforms of adjacent servo tracks (STx) are orthogonal to each other.

Abstract: Data storage devices (1) are provided in which tracking control is adapted to counter effects of vibration. A storage device has a device body (2) and a read/write head (6) for reading and writing data in a data track (10) of a storage medium (5) carried by the device body (2) in use. An actuator system (7) is mounted on the device body (2) for effecting movement of the read/write head (6) relative to the data track (10) to align the head with the data track. The actuator system (7) has a plurality of degrees of freedom for effecting said movement, and a controller (12) controls the actuator system (7) to effect said movement. At least one body vibration sensor (8) is provided on the device body (2) for generating a signal indicative of vibration of the body. At least one actuator vibration sensor (9) is provided on the actuator system (7) for generating a signal indicative of vibration of the actuator system. The controller (12) is adapted to process the signals from the body and actuator vibration sensors (8, 9) to derive at least one coupling signal indicative of vibration coupling between said degrees of freedom, and to control the actuator system (7) in dependence on said at least one coupling signal and the signal from said at least one body vibration sensor (8).

Abstract: A tape head 1g has a tape-bearing surface 21 configured, in operation, to urge a magnetic tape against the bearing surface. The bearing surface comprises a transducer area 44 having at least one transducer 40 that is a read and/or write element, and a structured area 50u, 50d, 52l, 52r adjacent to the transducer area comprising a periodic array of protruding topographic features. The topographic features configured to determine a minimal distance between the transducer area and a tape. The tape bearing surface can comprise different structured areas having different topographic features or areas without topographic features. The topographic features may have a diameter between 100 and 5000 nm with a distance between the features of 1 and 20 micrometres. A layer of material, such as FeN, TiN, SiN, diamond like carbon, or aluminium oxide, may be deposited on top of the features.

Ein Stellgliedsystem (7) ist am Gehäuse (2) der Einheit angebracht, um eine Bewegung des Lese/Schreib-Kopfs (6) im Verhältnis zur Datenspur (10) zu bewirken, um den Kopf an der Datenspur auszurichten. Das Stellgliedsystem (7) weist eine Vielzahl von Freiheitsgraden zum Bewirken der Bewegung auf, und eine Steuereinheit (12) steuert das Stellgliedsystem (7), um die Bewegung zu bewirken. Am Gehäuse (2) der Einheit wird mindestens ein Gehäuse-Vibrationssensor (8) bereitgestellt, um ein Signal zu erzeugen, das Vibrationen des Gehäuses anzeigt. Am Stellgliedsystem (7) wird mindestens ein Stellgliedsystem-Vibrationssensor (9) bereitgestellt, um ein Signal zu erzeugen, das Vibrationen des Stellgliedsystems anzeigt. Die Steuereinheit (12) ist in der Lage, die Signale von dem Gehäuse- und dem Stellglied-Vibrationssensor (8, 9) zu verarbeiten, um mindestens ein Kopplungssignal abzuleiten, das eine Vibrationskopplung zwischen den Freiheitsgraden anzeigt, und um das Stellgliedsystem (7) in Abhängigkeit von dem mindestens einen Kopplungssignal und dem Signal von dem mindestens einen Gehäuse-Vibrationssensor (8) zu steuern.
