Abstract: The present invention relates to a resistive ribbon (10), for use in a resistive ribbon thermal transfer printing process, of the type which comprises a resistive layer (12) which produces localised heating to effect printing when an electric current is passed therethrough, a thermally fusible ink layer (18) capable of being melted when heated by the localised heating in the resistive layer, and a current return layer (16) of an electrically conductive material, located between the resistive layer (12) and the ink layer (18) and through which the electrical current passes. A ribbon in accordance with the invention is characterised in that the resistive layer (12) includes a phase-separated surface region (14) located adjacent the current return layer (16) and imparting enhanced mechanical and thermal properties to the resistive layer (12).

Abstract: A color facsimile transmission apparatus wherein a beam of white light is dispersed into component colors by a prism. The color dispersed bands of illumination are focused to irradiate a portion of a moving document. The reflected, colored light from the document is focused on the surface of three charge coupled devices (CCDs) so that the red illuminating band irradiates a first CCD and the green and blue bands respectively irradiate the second and third CCDs. The movement of the document causes each line of the document to scroll through the illuminating band over each of the CCDs. The CCDs are operated in the time delay and integration mode to generate charge packets corresponding to the picture elements of the red, green and blue component line images of each line of the document.

Abstract: Improved electroerosion recording media are described in which ablatable polymers are used in the electroerosion recording medium. This medium includes at least a substrate or support layer, a base layer which protects the substrate, a thin film of conductive material on the base layer and which can be eroded, and a protective overcoat layer. Ablatable polymers are used as binders in either the base layer or the top protective layer, or both, in order to provide advantages during electroerosion. These ablatable polymers undergo thermally induced depolymerization in such a way that the result is the formation of volatile monomeric or low molecular weight species as the predominant products, with little or no adherent residue.

Abstract: Electroerosion recording materials of superior scratch resistance are provided without the need for a lubricant overcoat by incorporating a hard, lubricating hydrophobic polymer layer between the support and the removable, thin conductive layer to reduce plastic deformation of the support under stylus writing pressure. The intermediate polymer layer provides a highly adhering surface for the overlying aluminum film and contains graphite fluoride and/or fluorocarbon resins such as Teflon R and hard particles such as silica. The materials may be used in various printing processes including making directly readable images, direct negatives and wear resistant offset printing masters.

Abstract: A doctor blade (9) is used to apply a powdered toner to the depleted regions (5) of a resistive thermal transfer ribbon comprising a resistive substrate (1) and a layer of thermally fusible ink (3). The ribbon is moved adjacent a heating electrode (13, 15) that passes current through the resistive substrate (1) of the ribbon so that a transverse line on the ribbon is heated and the added toner is fused in the depleted regions (5) of the ribbon. The heated area of the ribbon is thereafter compressed by a cold roller (17) to provide a uniform re-inked surface.
