    Abstract: A color facsimile transmission apparatus wherein a beam of white light is dispersed into component colors by a prism. The color dispersed bands of illumination are focused to irradiate a portion of a moving document. The reflected, colored light from the document is focused on the surface of three charge coupled devices (CCDs) so that the red illuminating band irradiates a first CCD and the green and blue bands respectively irradiate the second and third CCDs. The movement of the document causes each line of the document to scroll through the illuminating band over each of the CCDs. The CCDs are operated in the time delay and integration mode to generate charge packets corresponding to the picture elements of the red, green and blue component line images of each line of the document.

    Abstract: A doctor blade (9) is used to apply a powdered toner to the depleted regions (5) of a resistive thermal transfer ribbon comprising a resistive substrate (1) and a layer of thermally fusible ink (3). The ribbon is moved adjacent a heating electrode (13, 15) that passes current through the resistive substrate (1) of the ribbon so that a transverse line on the ribbon is heated and the added toner is fused in the depleted regions (5) of the ribbon. The heated area of the ribbon is thereafter compressed by a cold roller (17) to provide a uniform re-inked surface.

    Abstract: An electronic processing system for reproducing mixed images, ie, original images having areas of continuous tone and areas of text, in such a manner that both areas are of balancedm good quality in the reproduction. The image to be reproduced is (1) divided into non-overlapping 4 x 4 blocks of pixels or picture elements, and, (2) each block is classified as either of TEXT or IMAGE, based on the values of the 16 pixels within it. The classification is improved by (3) eliminating short runs of blocks with the same classification. The pixel values are then adjusted by appropriately (4) thresholding those in the TEXT blocks and, (5) averaging those in the IMAGE blocks. The IMAGE block values are quantized to one of 17 levels using an improved error diffusing process and then mapped onto a 4 x 4 pattern preparatory to (6) merging the binary images for the TEXT and IMAGE areas. Converting to various patterns to suit the output device such as a specific printer, is possible by permitting the conversion of the bits for an IMAGE block from one pattern table to another.

    Abstract: A grey scale filter for image data is described which forces a least significant bit (1, 12) of a current pel equal to a most significant bit of the current pel when the most significant bit (m, 18) of the current pel is equal to the most significant bit of a previous (p, 16) and a next (n, 14) pel on a scan line of an image. The invention is embodied in a logic structure (20) employing exclusive ORs to make comparisons between the previous, next and current pels and logic gates to gate the value of the most significant bit of the most current pel to an output representing a filtered least significant bit of the current pel. It should be noted that the value of the most significant bit of the current pel (m, 18) is not changed since only changes between grey-white and white or grey-black and black are filtered by the present invention.
