Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an antimicrobial agent capable of suppressing growth of pathogenic bacteria of dental caries and periodontal diseases and causative bacteria of oral odor and hardly exhibiting effect on intestional bacteria. SOLUTION: This compound is a sesquiterpene compound represented by the formula. The compound is obtained by pulverizing dried Curcuma longa L. of a natural plant, extracting the resultant powder with a crude extract solution and fractionating the extract by chromatography. The compound represented by the formula is blended with vehicles for oral cavity such as a polishing agent, a binder and a wetting agent to provide the objective composition for oral cavity useful as troche, tooth powder or mouth wash. The content of the compound in the composition is preferably 0.001-5wt.%.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a curcuma longa extract having a slight dyeability by extracting a rhizome of Curcuma longa with a hydrocarbon-based solvent and to obtain a composition for an oral cavity by incorporating the resultant Curcuma longa extract into the composition. SOLUTION: This Curcuma longa extract is obtained by extracting a rhizome of Curcuma longa with 1-50wt. times, preferably 2-20wt. times of a hydrocarbon- based solvent (e.g. hexane or petroleum ether) at 0-200 deg.C, preferably from a room temperature to 80 deg.C for 10min-1 month, preferably 1-24hrs, and filtrating or condensing, as necessary. The composition for an oral cavity is obtained by incorporating 0.001-10wt.%, preferably 0.005-5wt.% of the resultant Curcuma longa extract as an active component. The composition for an oral cavity can be prepared to paste dentifrice, tooth powder, liquid-like dentifrice, liquid dentifrice, a mouth-washing agent, a gargle, gingiva massage cream, a troche, a candy and chewing gum, etc. By using the Curcuma longa extract having reduced dyeability, an excellent composition for an oral cavity without dyeing a toothbrush, etc., can be obtained.

SOLUTION: This antibacterial agent contains at least one kind of a sesquiterpene compound expressed by the formula (R and R are each H or hydroxyl; R and R are each H, hydroxyl or carbonyl together with C; a broken line may be a double bond) as an active component. A composition for oral cavity is obtained by including 0.0001-10wt.%, preferably 0.001-5wt.% of at least one kind of the compound of the formula as an active component. The compound of the formula is obtained by extracting Curcuma longa or a plant belonging to the genus Curcuma other than Curcuma longa, or by a chemical synthesis. This antibacterium agent suppresses growth of a Streptococcus mutans as a pathogenic fungus of dental caries, Porphyromonas gingivalis as a pathogenic fungus of periodontosis, Fusobacterium nucleatum as a causing bacterium of halitosis and Propionibacterium acnes as a causing bacterium of a pimple and almost does not exhibit an effect to Escherichia coil as an enteral bacterium.
