Abstract: PURPOSE:To precipitate and separate an alkali metal soap economically without washing with alkaline water in the deacidification of a fatty acid ester containing free fatty acid, by adding an alkali metal carbonate, etc., to the fatty acid ester to convert the free fatty acid to an alkali metal soap and adding a specific compound to the soap. CONSTITUTION:A fatty acid ester containing a free fatty acid is added with >=1 equivalent, preferably 1.0-1.1 equivalent (based on the free fatty acid) of an alkali metal carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide, and the mixture is stirred at a temperature above the melting point of the free fatty acid (preferably at 70-90 deg.C) for 30-60min to covert the free fatty acid to an alkali metal soap. An alkaline earth metal halide is added to the soap and the mixture is stirred at a temperature above the melting point of the free fatty acid (preferably at 70-90 deg.C) for 30-60min to convert the alkali metal soap to an insoluble alkaline earth metal soap. The amount of the alkaline earth metal halide is equivalent to that of the alkali metal hydroxide. The precipitated alkaline earth metal soap is removed e.g. by filtration to obtain the objective deacidified fatty acid ester.
