    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new multi-purpose additive for a lubricating agent, especially improving the viscosity and dispersing characteristics of the lubricating agent, to provide a method for preparing such multi-purpose additive and to obtain a lubricating agent improving the dispersing and viscosity characteristics. SOLUTION: This dispersing agent-viscosity improving agent containing a metal for a lubricating oil is obtained by containing a reaction product of reactants containing the following (a) and (b), and (c) as necessary. (a) A hydrocarbon polymer grafted with an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or their functional derivative. (b) A derivative containing nitrogen and a metal of at least one kind of a derivative containing nitrogen and a metal of a polycarboxylic acid substituted by a hydrocarbon or their functional derivative and selected from the following (b-i) and (b-ii) groups; (b-i) an amide or an imide derivative of a metal salt; (b-ii) a metal complex of a non acidic acylated nitrogen compound. (c) At least one kind of a polyester containing hydroxyl group and at least one free hydroxyl group capable of performing condensation reaction.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multifunctional additive which acts as a viscosity modifier and a dispersant for lubricating oils and fuels by incorporating a hydrocarbon polymer having specific pendant groups bonded thereto and a specified mol.wt. into the same. SOLUTION: This additive contains a hydrocarbon polymer which, when it is not a star polymer, has an Mn of 20,000 to about 500,000 and when it is a star polymer, has a GPC peak mol.wt. of up to about 4,000,000 and which has pendant groups Aa and Bb bonded thereto. Here, A is a group of formula I, and B is a group of formula II. In the formulas, R is II or hydrocarbyl; R is a divalent hydrocarbylene; n is 0 or 1; R and R are each H, alkoxyhydocarbyl, aminohydrocarbyl, or the like; X is O, S, or NR ; R is H, NH2 , or the like; Z is a group of formula III; R is ethylene or propylene; a is 0 to about 50; and b is 1 to about 30. Pref. examples of the hydrocarbon polymer are a diene polymer, a conjugated diene-vinylarom. compd. copolymer, and a polymer of a 2 to about 28C aliph. olefin.

    Abstract: A nitrogen-containing ester derived from a carboxy-containing interpolymer having a reduced specific viscosity (RSV) of from about 0.05 to about 2, said interpolymer being derived from at least two monomers, (i) one of said monomers being at least one of an aliphatic olefin containing from 2 to about 30 carbon atoms and a vinyl aromatic monomer and (ii) the other of said monomers being at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated acylating agent, said ester being characterized by the presence within its polymeric structure of each of the following groups which are derived from the carboxy groups of said interpolymer: (A) from about 20 to about 70 mole % based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 13 to about 19 carbon atoms; (B) from about 80 to about 30 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from about 8 to about 12 carbon atoms, optionally; (C) up to about 20 mole %, based on moles of carboxyl groups in said interpolymer, of ester groups containing from 2 to 7 carbon atoms; wherein from about 93 to about 97% of the carboxy groups derived from the carboxy-containing interpolymer are ester groups, the balance of the carboxy groups comprising residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups which are then (D) reacted with at least one amino compound having an average of from 1 to about 1.1 primary or secondary amino groups, to convert from about 5 up to less than 50% of the carboxylic acid or anhydride groups to carbonyl-amino groups, with the unreacted carboxylic acid or anhydride groups remaining as (E) residual carboxylic acid or anhydride groups. Additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions are also disclosed.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a composition comprising (A) a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and (B) a minor amount of (i) a reaction product of (a) at least one dimercaptothiadiazole, and (b) at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated ester prepared by reacting an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acylating agent with a hydroxy compound, or (ii) a salt of the reaction product, provided that when the acylating agent is a monocarboxylic acylating agent then the hydroxy compound is a monohydroxy compound, and provided that when the ester is formed from a maleic acylating agent, then the ester is formed from a sulfur-containing hydroxy compound or a combination of a polyhydroxy compound and a monohydroxy. The invention also relates to aqueous fluids, greases, and concentrate compositions containing the reaction products and its salts. These additives generally show an ability to improve antiwear (including extreme pressure) and antioxidation properties of lubricants, aqueous fluids, and greases.
