Abstract:
A lubricant and concentrate composition comprises a hindered-phenol-containing diester antioxidant derived from a hydrocarbyl diol or an amide diol. A method for improving the performance of a lubricant composition, especially a lubricant composition for an internal combustion engine, comprises the antioxidant.
Abstract:
A saligenin derivative such as the magnesium salt of a polynuclear bridged phenol product is useful as an additive for a lubricating composition. Up to 11 hydrocarbyl-substituted phenolic aromatic units are bridged by -CH2- or -CH2OCH2 groups, and additional terminal -CHO or -CH2OH substituents may be present. At least one aromatic ring contains a hydrocarbyl substituent of 1 to 60 carbon atoms, and the total number of carbon atoms in all such hydrocarbyl groups should be at least 7.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good fuel or lubricant compsn. by incorporating a carboxylic acid reaction product obtd. by reacting a substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent with a carboxylic acid deriv. into the same. SOLUTION: This compsn. contains a carboxylic acid reaction product which is formed by reacting 1 equivalent of a polyolefin-substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent of formula I with 0.5-3.0 mol of a carboxylic acid deriv. of formula II or III (e.g. glyoxylic ester hemiacetal), then with an α,δ-unsatd. carboxylic acid, and with a compd. selected from among ammonia, hydrazine, monoamines, and polyamines. The substd. carboxylic acid acylating agent is obtd. by the chlorine-catalyzed reaction of a polyolefin (e.g. polybutene, etc.) having a wt. average mol.wt. of 200-5,000 with an α,δ-unsatd. carboxylic anhydride (e.g. maleic anhydride, etc.). In formulas I to III, R is a hydrocarbylated olefin group; R , R , and R are each H or hydrocarbyl; R is a divalent hydrocarbylene; and n is 0 or 1.
