PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multifunctional additive which acts as a viscosity modifier and a dispersant for lubricating oils and fuels by incorporating a hydrocarbon polymer having specific pendant groups bonded thereto and a specified mol.wt. into the same. SOLUTION: This additive contains a hydrocarbon polymer which, when it is not a star polymer, has an Mn of 20,000 to about 500,000 and when it is a star polymer, has a GPC peak mol.wt. of up to about 4,000,000 and which has pendant groups Aa and Bb bonded thereto. Here, A is a group of formula I, and B is a group of formula II. In the formulas, R is II or hydrocarbyl; R is a divalent hydrocarbylene; n is 0 or 1; R and R are each H, alkoxyhydocarbyl, aminohydrocarbyl, or the like; X is O, S, or NR ; R is H, NH2 , or the like; Z is a group of formula III; R is ethylene or propylene; a is 0 to about 50; and b is 1 to about 30. Pref. examples of the hydrocarbon polymer are a diene polymer, a conjugated diene-vinylarom. compd. copolymer, and a polymer of a 2 to about 28C aliph. olefin.

Abstract:
This invention relates to compositions which are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels, and more particularly, to additives which are chlorine-free or contain only minor amounts of chlorine. More particularly, carboxylic compositions are described which are prepared by reacting a terpolymer derived from a mixture of monomers comprising ethylene, an alpha-olefin containing 3 to about 20 carbon atoms, and a non-conjugated polyene with an alpha,beta-monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof. These carboxylic compositions may be used in lubricating oil or fuel compositions or may be used to form carboxylic derivative compositions which are useful in lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Such useful carboxylic derivative compositions can be prepared by reacting at least one of the above-described carboxylic compositions with a reactant selected from the group consisting of (A) amines characterized by the presence within their structure of at least one H-N
Abstract:
This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of a salt of at least one nitrogen containing polyacrylate and at least one phosphorus acid ester. The invention also relates to lubricating compositions and concentrates containing the same. The present phosphorus salts of the nitrogen containing copolymers provide improved dispersant, viscosity improver and antiwear properties to lubricating compositions.
