Abstract: The present invention provides a method and use of incorporating water-solub le or water-dispersible polymer(s), stabilized in an invert (water-in-oil) emulsion, into an oil continuous metalworking emulsifiable concentrate, whic h is then diluted with water to form an end use oil-in-water emulsion. Accordi ng to the present invention, the invert polymer emulsion (A) is added to the metalworking emulsifiable concentrate (B) to embed at least one water-solubl e or water-dispersible polymer into the metalworking emulsifiable concentrate, to form a stable, emulsifiable concentrate (C). The stable, emulsifiable concentrate (C) is then diluted with water to form an end use oil-in-water emulsion (D) causing the water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer in the e nd use emulsion to impart antimist performance.

Abstract: An electrorheological fluid is prepared from a hydrophobic liquid medium and a dispersed particulate phase of (i) a polar solid material which is capable of exhibiting electrorheological activity in the presence of a low molecular weight polar material and (ii) a non-cellulosic polymeric material having a solubility parameter of about 15 to about 50 (MPa) and exhibiting substantially no electrorheological activity in the absence of a low molecular weight polar material. The fluid optionally contains a low molecular weight polar activator. The fluid has good electrorheological performance over a broad temperature range.
