    Abstract: An improved plain old telephone service (POTS) line card (238) may be directly connected to a customer line that is also connected to a digital subscriber line access module. A second order filter (246) is added to the front end of the POTS line card in order to attenuate XDSL signals and to lower its amplitude. A new digital signal processor (240) (DSP) includes further low pass filtering functions (248), gain compensation (250), termination impedance compensation (254) and balance network compensation (252) to provide the proper balanced network as is known in current POTS cards but not provided in current XDSL services. This card may also be used alone, without a XDSL equipped line.

    Abstract: A communication system and method for allocating overhead voltage between a telephonic switch and a user device is described. A line driver is located in the telephonic switch and is coupled to the user device. The line driver is in one of a plurality of communication states. A processor, coupled to the line driver, allocates the overhead voltage in response to the communication state of the line driver.

A second set of relays control the connection of the metallic test bus to th e line card to the subscriber loop. A signal is sent from either metallic test unit to caus e the relays to change to provide a clear path for metallic testing from DC to light.

    Abstract: Metallic testing of a subscriber loop (223) that provides voice and DSL services is provided by a voice switch (200) and DSL services (202), each of which includes a metallic test unit (208, 258). A voice line card (204) has a connection to a first metallic test bus (210) connected to the voice switch metallic test unit (208) via a first relay set (220, 222) configured to connect the metallic test bus to the subscriber loop and to disconnect the subscriber loop from the line card during testing. The DSL line card (240) has a connection to a second metallic test bus (260), which is also connected to the DSLAM metallic test unit (258), and to the subscriber loop. A second set of relays (250, 252) control the connection of the metallic test bus to the line card to the subscriber loop.
